Dr. Abijah Richard Rembert

Dr. Rembert was born in 1811 in South Carolina. He was the son of Abijah Rembert II and Sarah Gayle Rembert. He attended medical school in

Paris, France. Before coming to Louisiana he practiced medicine in Selma, AL and taught college in Tuscaloosa (where he met his wife Emily Alabama Hale,

 whom he married in 1838). 

In Louisiana he practiced medicine in Mansfield, owned a large plantation in Sabine Parish, and was co-owner of the Rembert-Chapman sawmill in

Old Pleasant Hill. He also taught math and science at Mansfield Female College.  He was a 6th generation descendant of Andre' and Anne Rembert,

Huguenot immigrants from Pont Royal, France, arriving in the Colonies in 1684. The Rembert home was just south of the present KCS RR tracks. He

 passed away in 1857 at the age of 46, leaving four children.
