Funeral services for Melvin Cody Compton, 77, of Temple Texas were held
Friday, August 15, 2003 at 10 a.m. from Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel in
Sealy, Texas with Reverend Bernard Snock officiating. Interment was at the
National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
Pallbearers serving were Norman Ashlock, Melvin Freeman, Jerry Hamell,
Scott Nixon, Matthew Freeman, Charles Guin, Brandon Compton and Tanner Freeman.
Born in Lockhart, Texas, Melvin was the son of William and Lula Mae
(Shelton) Compton. He was raised in Lockhart and attended Lockhart
schools.
Melvin Cody Compton married the former Miss Rita Dorn. Melvin worked as a
welder in the construction business. Mr. Compton was a Marine Corporal who
served his country in the United States Marines in the Pacific Area from
October 1944 to July 1946. He participated in the action of Iwo Jima
February 19 to March 16, 1945 and was on the hill at the flag raising and
also participated in the operation of Japan, September 22, 1945 to July 1,
1946. Melvin was of Catholic faith.
Melvin Cody Compton died August 9, 2003 in Temple, Texas.
His survivors are his wife Rita Compton of Pasadena, Texas, daughters
Martha Freeman and husband M.E. "Gene" of Sealy, Catherine C. Hamell and husband
Jerry of Pasadena, Dorothy Jo Compton of Pasadena, sons William Franklin
Compton, II and wife Christine of Alturas, California, Melvin Cody
Compton, Jr. of Pasadena, grandchildren Melanie Lockstedt, Matthew Freeman, Charlie
Guin, Christopher Smith, Sgt William F. Compton, III, Patricia, Bryata,
Terez, Jeanette, Jerry, Chandra, Brandon and Valerie Compton and great
grandchildren Tanner and Brianna Lockstedt, Steven and Matthew Guin,
Zachary, Lauren, Melia and Daisy Compton.
Preceded in death by his parents William and Lula Mae Compton, brothers
Herman, William and Preston, sisters Eva, Edna, Vera and Faye and
granddaughter Catherine Cecilia Compton, II.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels,
Sealy, Texas.
