Funeral services of Mathilda Peters, 98, of Sealy, were held Wednesday May
28, 2003 at 10 a.m. from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sealy
with Rev. Octavio Muguerza celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal.
Interment was at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Sealy.
Pallbearers for the service were Rick, Steve, Kevin and Tim Peters,
Zachary Bucci, George Petter and Charles Vasut.
Mathilda Johanna Vasut was one of 12 children born in Fayetteville, Texas
to Frank and Johanna (Chovanec) Vasut. She was raised in Fayetteville and
attended the Fayetteville Catholic School.
On September 6, 1926. Mathilda
and Mr. Joe Peters were married with ceremony held in Fayetteville. They
moved to Amarillo, where Joe was employed with the railroad, they moved to
Gruen, Texas before settling in Sealy, where they made their home and
raised their children until they became residents of Katyville.
Joe and Mathilda
were married for 72 years when he died on January 14, 1999. Mathilda was a
member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and the Sealy KJZT. She
was a homemaker and loved to sew, quilt, cook, bake and was very good at
canning and preserving a variety of fruits, vegetables and potatoes, that she and
Joe raised in their garden.
Their flower gardens were also a beautiful
sight to see with many varieties of flowers that bloomed year round. Mathilda
and Joe loved to go dancing and go to celebrations in all the surrounding
towns. She loved to listen to Czech and Polka music, play the piano and
accordion, read the newspapers (Fayetteville and Sealy) and she loved to play bingo
and dominoes. Her father taught her to play dominoes as a child and it helped
her to be good in math. She has enjoyed a long fruitful life and been
blessed with fairly good health, a deep faith in God and the love of
family and many friends.
Mathilda Johanna Peters died Monday, May 26, 2003 in Katy, Texas.
Survived by daughter and son-in-law Lorine and Jim Kirkham of Houston, son
and daughter-in-law Joe Jr. and Vessie Peters of Houston, grandchildren
Kathryn, Steve, Kevin, Rick and Tim Peters, great grandchildren Cecilia,
Christopher, Andrew and Jake Peters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents Frank and Johanna Vasut, husband Joe
Peters, sisters Millie Zapalac, Frances Shula, Sophie Kollaja, Julie
Supak,
Mary Appelt, Claudia Jurecka, brothers Frank, Joe, Charles, Emil and Henry
Vasut.
Funeral Services under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels,
Sealy, Texas.
