J.W. Booker, 79, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004 at Hendrick Medical Center.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of
Hillcrest Church of Christ, 650 E. Ambler Ave., Abilene.
Visitation was Friday, Nov. 26, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at Elliot-Hamil Funeral
Home, 542 Hickory Street, Abilene. Burial followed at Elmwood Memorial Park.
Born in Rusk County to Jabe W. and Ollie Booker on July 9, 1925, J.W.
graduated from Rusk High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II from 1943 until 1946 receiving an honorable discharge. He
attended Abilene Christian College in 1948-1949 but graduated with a B.S.
and a M.Ed. from Stephen F. Austin State College in 1951.
He married Charlotte Ann Teny on Aug. 13, 1949 in Fort Worth. They were
married for 55 years.
Mr. Booker taught high school history and government for 33 years and ended
his career as a high school principal. He coached girls' basketball for 25
years in Lufkin-Central, Bellville, Jasper and Brookland, Texas. He helped
form the Texas State Girls Basketball Association in 1953, and he was
elected to the Coaches' Hall of Fame. He was also an active member of the
Texas State Retired Teachers Association.
J.W. Booker served as a minister/elder/Bible school teacher for the Churches
of Christ in Brookland, Jasper and Buna, Texas, for 40 years. He had been a
member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ for three years at the time of his
death.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 8 brothers and 2 sisters; a
granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Hilton; and a grandson, Michael Lewis
Booker.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte Ann Teny Booker; two sons and their
wives, Teny and Virginia Booker of Kilgore and Steve and Judy Booker of
Terrell; one daughter and her husband, Sheila and Don Hilton of Abilene;
eight grandchildren, Sarah and Jason Booker, Tracy, Brandon and Michelle
Booker, JuliAnne Corn, Brady and Marissa Hilton; several nieces and nephews,
many friends from Jasper and Abilene, and a large number of former students
and athletes.
Memorials may be made to Christian Homes of Abilene or to the Abilene
Christian University Women's Basketball program.
