Gladys Amalia Ida Brokmeyer Brune was born on January 7, 1921, at the Brune place in the Zimmerscheidt Community of Colorado County to Ernst and Amalia Zapalac Brokmeyer. She passed away in the Trinity Care Center in Brenham on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at the age of 83. She was baptized into the Christian faith on February 6, 1921 by Pastor Hans Krause of Trinity Lutheran Church in Frelsburg. When the family moved to the New Ulm Community in her early childhood, she became a member of St. John Lutheran Church in New Ulm. She was confirmed as a young adult on August 9, 1936 by Pastor H. C. Poehlmann. In her younger days she served as a Sunday School Teacher and sang in the church choir. She was part of the altar guild for many years. She was active in the Women of the ELCA for 58 years and enjoyed piecing quilts for Lutheran World Relief. On July 20, 1940 Gladys was married to Wilkins H. Brune in the Lutheran parsonage in Frelsburg by Pastor Leo Simon. They were blessed with 54 years of marriage. She was housewife, homemaker, and business partner in those 54 years of marriage. She was educated in the New Ulm School District and graduated from New Ulm High School in May 1938 as valedictorian of her class. She enjoyed math and theater arts. She liked to be in plays and loved to perform monologues. Her hobbies included quilting, sewing, crocheting, playing dominoes, and talking to friend on the telephone. Gladys is survived by two children: daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Floyd Tonn of New Ulm, and son and daughter-in-law, Ronald & Shirley Brune of Sealy; four grandchildren, Janet Blezinger and husband Bradford of New Ulm, Ronda Ganske of Midland, Michigan and special friend Ty Ganske of Austin, Lehron Brune and Elise Brune of Sealy; two great-grandchildren, Bradford Blezinger, Jr. and Emilie Blezinger of New Ulm; sister, Elsie Pierce and husband John of Kenner, Louisana; brother-in-law, Clarence Hoppe of Seguin; step-brother, William Graeter and wife Rose of Fayetteville; and sister-in-law, Alice Brune of Industry. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Wilkins H. Brune; parents, Ernst and Amalia Zapalac Brokmeyer; brother and sister-in-law, Isedore and Doris Brokmeyer; sister, Nancie Hoppe; two infant sisters, Felicia and Irene Brokmeyer; and nephew, John E. Pierce, Jr. Funeral services were Sunday, August 22, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in New Ulm with the Rev. Bill Mosley officiating under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus. Burial in the New Ulm Cemetery in New Ulm. Pallbearers were Donald Brokmeyer, James Brokmeyer, Luke Pierce, Robert Neese, Arlen Brune and Larry Brune. Honorary pallbearers were Albert and Layne Hoppe, Bruce and Randy Brokmeyer, Robin Maertz, Penny Neese, Nancy Dibbler, Sharon Biggs, Vaughn and David Brune. The family of Gladys Brune wishes to thank you for your presence here today.
