Bellville Times Funeral services celebrating the life of Tom Galbreath, 75, of Rockdale, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at St. John's United Methodist Church. An overflow crowd of more than 350 turned out to pay final respects to the well-known civic and church leader,. The Rev. John Warren, St. John's pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the Salty Cemetery. Mr. Galbreath passed away at 8 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale after a sudden illness. He was born July 5, 1929, in Thorndale, to Otte and Ollie Willie Clark Galbreath. He was a 1946 graduate of Thorndale High School. He received his bachelor of Science Degree in 1950, his Master of Education in 1960 and his Education Administration Certification in 1968, all from Texas A&M University. Mr. Galbreath and Wanda Dean Walthall were married in Thorndale on Dec. 21, 1952. He served as a vocational agriculture teacher in Taylor for 13 years and in the valley for two years. He was principal at Goliad two years and Garwood one year. Then he served as superintendent of schools in Garwood from 1967-1968, Bellville 1968-1976, Hallettsville 1976-1984 and Runge 1984-1990. He retired from his education career in 1990 and moved to Rockdale. He worked 10 years for Phillips and Lucky Funeral Home, retiring in 2000. Mr. Galbreath was a very active member and a lay speaker at St. John's United Methodist Church. He was a member of Rockdale Masonic Lodge No. 414 AF&AM, and the Rockdale Noon Lions Club where he had served as president. He was past district governor of Lions International District 2-S3 and also served as director on the board of the Texas Lions Children's Camp at Kerrville. For the past two years, he was president of the Milam County Retired Teachers Association. He had been elected 2nd Vice-President of District VI RTA for 2004-2006. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Wanda Galbreath of Rockdale; three daughters, two from Round Rock, and one from Rockdale; a son; one sister and one brother all from Rockdale; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Words of remembrance and celebration were presented by family and friends. Because he was very active as a member of the Texas A&M Former Student Association and known for his devotion to A&M, "The Spirit of Aggieland" and the "Aggie Way Hymn" were played as a final tribute.
