Funeral services for Martha Mateja, 83, of Sealy were held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Frydek with the Rev. Bernard Snock celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. The parish rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, may 26, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church followed by the parish vigil service. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Frydek. Pallbearers for the service were Larry Rapsilver, Nick Herman, Doug Kmiec, Adrian Blakey, Emil Reznicek and Gary Gostecnik. The former Miss Martha Vavrecka was born to parents Rudolph and Albina Strouhal Vavrecka in Hockheim. She was raised in Sugar Land and attended Sugar Land Public School. On March 26, 1940, she married Frank Mateja in Frydek and spent part of her life helping the sick at the nursing home and private homes. Mrs. Mateja was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the K.J.Z.T. Society in Frydek. She died Monday, May 24, 2004 in Sealy. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Barbara Kmiec and August of Chappell Hill, Doris Jean Starkey of Houston, Dolores Herman and Nick of Houston, and Edward Mateja and Maryann of San Felipe; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Albina Vavrecka; husband, Frank Mateja; sons, Calvin and Frank Mateja, Jr.; and brother, Bennie Vavrecka. Funeral services were held under the direction of the Knesek Family Funeral Chapel of Sealy. Posted by Joy Neely
