Gilbert William Minton, 92, of Bleiblerville, passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Born July 10, 1912, in Nelsonville, Gilbert, affectionately known as Mickey, was the son of John I. and Teresie Sefcik Minton. He was baptized on August 18, 1912, and confirmed at the Nelsonville Brethren Church. He attended Nelsonville schools. On November 29, 1939, he was united in marriage with Leona Warmke at the Welcome Lutheran Church. He retired as a farmer, yet continued to work as a ranch manager. Gilbert and Leona resided in the Bleiblerville community throughout their 65 years of marriage. As a young man, Gilbert joined the Civilian Conservation Corps to build roads in Arizona. He served his community as a trustee at the Welcome School, Chairman of the PTA and a leader in the Tri-County Community Organization. Gilbert was a member of the Austin County Farm Bureau, SPJST Bleiblerville/Nelsonville Lodge, Bleiblerville Volunteer Fire Department and Starkšs Domino Club. He was a lifetime member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church. He served over 20 years on the Board of Elders and was instrumental in the continuing growth of the congregation. He was a BYF sponsor, Superintendent of Sunday Schools and the manager of the church league baseball team. Gilbert dedicated his time to his love of God. Gilbert was an avid sports fan having played baseball and participated in track-and-field events as a youth. He enjoyed singing hymns with his siblings and continued to love music throughout his life. He looked forward to playing cards and dominoes with friends and family. Gilbert enjoyed woodworking, dominoes with friends and family, gardening and reading several newspapers daily. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was proud of his Czech heritage and of his country. He is held in loving memory by his wife, Leona of Bleiblerville; daughter, Carolyn Balke and her husband James, also of Bleiblerville; granddaughters, Kelly Balke of Waco and Susan Balke of Houston; and niece, Lorraine Teufel of Brenham. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lexie Maresh, and Nettie Bell Stepan; brother, Danford Minton and two infant brothers; also brothers-in-law, A. J. Maresh, and Otto Stepan; and sister-in-law, Pearl Nunn Minton. Funeral Service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Reverend Michael Groseclose officiating. Burial followed in National Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randall Teufel, Steve Doty, Virgil Tiemann, Billy Warmke, O. B. Shelburne, Kermit Kolwes, Allen Stepan and Tommy Kamas. Honorary pallbearers included Carden Jenkins, Bill Davis, Kermit Teufel, Casper Balke, Herbert Schovajsa, Alvin Schultz, Sr. and Bruce Buenger. In lieu of usual remembrances, friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the Nelsonville Brethren Church Building Fund, 352 Nelsonville Church Road, Bellville, TX 77418.
