Anita Louise Balke Schumann, age 92, died at Pine Ridge Health Care Center in Livingston, on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004 of natural causes. She was born on July 24, 1912 in Peters, to Ben and Louise Timme Balke as the first daughter of their eight children. Her early life was spent in Sealy where she attended school. At sixteen, she began to work for the telephone company in Sealy where she was employed until her marriage on June 26, 1935, to Gerald Schumann from Bellville. After their marriage they moved to several northern Texas counties where he served as County Agricultural Extension Agent. In 1946, Gerald took the position of General Manager of San Bernard Electric Coop. in Bellville; a position he held for the next 33 years. Upon moving to Bellville, Anita became active in many organizations including PTA, home room mother, Bellville Band Parents, St. John's Lutheran Ladies Aide, Austin County Aggie Moms' Association and the American Cancer Society. She was Gerald's biggest advocate in personal and business issues. At one point, Anita had a yarn shop in her home where she demonstrated her expertise by teaching many people her favorite hobby: the joy of knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. She garnered many friends through her love of plants and flowers, especially African violets. When you met Anita you were usually impressed with her keen wit and amusing comebacks during conversation. This was a personality trait that continued all of her life. The three great loves of her life were husband, family and friends. That love was joyfully returned. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Mullins of Galveston; her two children, Kathryn Schumann Clark and husband, Lowell, and Robert Schumann and wife, Tommye Jo; four grandchildren, Camille Clark and companion, Karen James, Mitchell Clark and wife, Pamela, Stephanie Liescheski, and Lloyd Schumann and fiancee, Robyn Price; three great grandchildren, Cody and Case Liescheski and Jaden Clark-James. Preceding her in death were her parents, Ben and Louise Timme Balke, her husband, Gerald Schumann, her siblings, Louis, Raymond, Bennie, Arnold, and Homer Balke, and Leola Balke Ellis. The funeral service was held at St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 20, 2004 with Pastor David Henske officiating, followed by interment at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were John Douglas Brandt, Jeffery Ellis, Michael Ellis, Bill Mullins, Russell Mullins and Herbert Schumann. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church at 520 N.
