HELEN LAAKE SPALEK
Bellville Times
Helen Laake Spalek of Ramsey passed away July 9, 2004 at the age of 84 years
2 months and 16 days.
A rosary led by Deacon Bennie Holesovsky was recited at 7 p.m. Monday July
12 at Henneke Funeral Home of Columbus. Funeral services were held at 10
a.m. Tuesday July 13 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Dan
Kahlich and Deacon Bennie Holesovsky officiating. Burial was at Sts. Peter
and Paul Catholic Cemetery at Frelsburg under the direction of Henneke
Funeral Home.
She was a beloved loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great
grandmother, sister, sister-in-law and aunt. She shared a lifetime of
devotion to the Catholic faith. She will be greatly missed by all. She was
baptized, received first Holy Communion, confirmed and matrimony at Sts.
Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Frelsburg.
She was great homemaker, seamstress, and quilt maker, great gardener who
grow everything from fruit trees, vegetables and flowers. She made wedding
cakes and a wonderful baker who could make homemade bread, kolaches,
cinnamon rolls, cakes and pies. She was a great cook making everything from
scratch. She was an excellent quilt maker and designed art work quilts all
make out of solid colors. She also made homemade noodles, butter, canned
vegetables, pickles and jams.
Before the plastic and silk flowers came out she made beautiful roses,
gladiolas and carnations for funerals out of crepe paper, which were
beautiful. She was always willing to help others. She loved to go fishing,
hunting, going to the coast, talking about the good old days when she was
young, polkas, and waltz music. She enjoyed the world of antiques.
Her family loved her and they cared for her with great devotion. We will
miss her strength of character, warm smile, hearty laugh and her wonderful
sense of humor. She touched our lives with her love. Though she has gone to
be with God, she will live on in the hearts of her family.
She was born April 23, 1920 to Alvin and Dorothy Stock Laake and was raised
at Frelsburg. She received her education at Frelsburg and New Ulm schools.
On Sept. 2, 1943 she married her husband Jerome J. Spalek of Fayetteville
who passed away on Feb. 21, 1968. That year they were looking forward to
celebrating their 25th anniversary.
They had two children, a daughter and a son both born at Fayetteville. They
lived at Fayetteville from 1943 to 1946 and in 1947 they moved to Ramsey
where they built their new home and where she lived for 57 years. She and
her husband loved to make all the church picnics.
We love her dearly and will forever cherish her memories. May her integrity
and courage live through the many lives she created and touched. In her own
words, her children were her jewels.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Bryan Spalek and Kevin Spalek of Columbus;
great grandson, James Jennings of Industry; nephews, Darryl Laake of New
