FLORENCE HILL BOYD
Bellville Times

Funeral services for Florence Hill Boyd, 93, of San Felipe, were held
Saturday, March 25, 2006 at 10 a.m. from Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel in
Sealy, with Rev. Doug Law officiating. She died March 22, 2006 in Bellville.
Interment was at the Hill Family Cemetery in San Felipe.
Florence Hill, the second daughter of Jacob Walter and Carrie May (Elder)
Hill was born at the family home in San Felipe on March 6, 1913. She had a
happy childhood, playing with older brothers Justus and George, her sister
Carrie May, and younger brother Robert. The children drove a buggy each day
to attend school in Sealy. As a 1931 graduate of Sealy High School she was
active in sports and drama.
After her wedding to James Chesley Boyd in Houston, she lived on the Boyd
Family Farm near McDowell Switch. They raised registered quarter horses and
fine cattle.
She was a respected breeder of AKC registered collies. Sunday was a special
day; she and her husband would arrive at church on horseback and attend to
their religious obligations. She taught Sunday school and served as a
secretary and President of the Board of the San Felipe Methodist Church.
Afterwards they would have dinner with her parents in her childhood home.
Mrs. Boyd was like a second mother to Alton and Florence May Ferrell. During
the 1965-66 school year she took in her great-niece as a result of the
ravages of Hurricane Betsy in Louisiana.
She loved to sing and as a noted soloist, her soprano voice was requested at
many Sealy area weddings, church services, and special functions.
She was a dedicated community volunteer. Boyd organized the annual Father of
Texas Day Celebrations as a part of her duties as an officer in Stephen F.
Austin Park Association.
She was a member of the United Methodist Women of Sealy for many years.
Additionally, she helped establish the tradition of the Easter Sunrise
Service held at Stephen F. Austin Historical Park. She did not miss a single
program from 1940 to 2004. This year's program will be dedicated to her
memory.
Pallbearers for the service were Joe Bilski, Robert Emshoff, Sidney Levine,
Wayne Schomburg, John B. Sims and Rick Waldrop.
Memorial contributions may be made to San Felipe United Methodist Church in
Sal Felipe, Hill family Cemetery in San Felipe or Stephen F. Austin Park
Association.
Funeral services were under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels,
Sealy.
