Bellville Times Burns Lee Clare of Brenham passed away on Jan. 28, 2006, at the age of 79. Burns led a rich and full life, surrounded by a loving family and a host of life-long friends. He was born Aug. 18, 1926, in Houston. He grew up in the Heights of Houston, graduating from Reagan High School. After graduation he attended Texas A&M University, becoming an ardent Aggie fan for life. However, his education was interrupted by an enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to college at the University of Houston. Burns retired from Shell Chemical Company in 1985 after 35 years of service. He and his wife, Nancy, retired to Jasper, Texas, to raise ostriches and emus for several years. Later they moved to Bellville; three years ago they made a final move to Brenham. Burns was a member of the Deer Park Shell Retirees Association, the Central Texas Shell Retirees Association, and a past board member of the Piney Creek Homeowners Association in Bellville. Burns was preceded in death by his parents, L.J. and Alice Knowles Clare, and by his beloved sister, Marjorie Clare LaBeaurne. He is survived by his wife and soul-mate of 42 years. Nancy Haigh Clare; one sister, Lucy Ann Weldon of Bronson, Texas; three daughters: Pam Phillips and her husband, Jim, of Portland, Ore., Penny Morris and her husband, Jim, of Needville, Patti Gazzaway and her husband Ken, of Conroe; three sons Mike Clare and his wife Dee of Virginia Beach, Va., Grady Cowart and his wife Eileen, of Lubbock, Ross Cowart and his wife Tammy of Deer Park; 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service honoring Burns will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 3, at Knesek Brothers Funeral Home, 842 Main Street in Bellville, (979-865-3121). Interment will follow at Bellville Mausoleum, Highway 36 in Bellville. The family sends a special thanks to the nursing staffs at Methodist Hospital and Kindred Hospital in the Houston Medical Center for their care and compassion.
