Services for long-time former U.S. Postmaster and businessman, Rudolf A. "Rudy" Engelking, Jr., 99, of Sealy, were conducted Monday, May 22, 2006, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Sealy, with the Rev. Bob Wawee officiating. Interment followed in the Sealy Cemetery. Mr. Engelking died on May 18, 2006 in Sealy. He was born September 7, 1906 in Broomtown, Texas to R.A. Engelking Sr. and Adele Schaffner Engelking. The family moved to Sealy in 1914 when Rudy's father relocated his broom factory. Engelking graduated from Sealy Public Schools in 1925 and the University of Texas at Austin in 1929 with a degree in Business Administration. Rudy and Gladys Keding were married on July 2, 1930. In 1929, Rudy was employed by C. Jim Stewart and Stevenson Co. of Houston as office manager for the San Antonio office. Returning to Sealy with his wife in 1932, he joined his father as assistant manager of the Sealy Broom Co. He was appointed Postmaster of the Sealy Post Office on April 15, 1940, and he served in that capacity until his retirement in 1972. Rudy was a member of the Meyers Methodist Church through the 1930s before joining St. John's Episcopal Church in 1939. At St. John's he served in many capacities. A member of the Sealy Chamber of Commerce since 1933, he served that office in many capacities, as well. An avid golfer, "Red," as he was often known, helped organize and charter the Stephen F. Austin Golf Assoc. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Sealy Oil Mill and Manufacturing Co., and was elected President in 1956 until the mill was sold. A civic-minded person, he was also a member of the Texas Excs Assoc., the Herman Sons, Sealy AARP, the National Association of Postmasters, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Sealy American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents -- R.A. and Adele Engelking Sr.; two bothers -- Paul; and Leslie; as well as his wife of 65 years, Gladys. Though Rudy and Gladys had not children of their own, they were blessed with a large family. He is survived by five nieces and one nephew. Dolores Sengelmann of Yoakum, Diane Janda and husband Jerry of Sealy, Myrna Ashorn and husband LeRoy of Huntsville, Beverly Ekarius and husband Charles of Sealy, Suzanne Bozean and husband Robert, of Sealy, and Bubba Luchan and wife Evelyn of Sealy. He is also survived by 12 great nephews and one great niece: Gary, Greg and Mark Sengelmann; Chris, Brett and Mark Janda; Chris Ashorn; Ryan Ekarius and Jana Ekarius; Keith and Rick Luchan; and Robbie and Brad Bozeman. Pallbearers were Billy Browne, William Kutra, Carl Nastoupil, Ron Remmert, Billy Schavrda, and Tommy Ward.
