Funeral Services for Dr. Jesse E. Justiss, Jr., 76, of Bellville, were held Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at 2 p.m. from Bellville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Stutes officiating. Graveside services was held Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, Texas. Honorary pallbearers were Henry Grawunder, Gary Frank, Don Bosse, Welton Hill, Christophe Gay, Bobby Fick, Winston and Bob Neely, Larry Lischka, Jerry Emshoff, Roy Acebo and Billy Henske. Born in Howland, Texas, Jesse Edward Justiss Jr. was the son of Jesse and Mildred Dodson Justiss. He attended grade school in Howland and Delmar and graduated from Paris High School. He grew up on his father's cotton farm; his father managed a cotton gin. While attending medical school, Jesse and the former Peggy Ruth Berry were married on Aug. 23, 1953. He obtained a BA from the University of Texas and an MD degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He was a member of Lambda chi alpha at UT in Austin and Phi Beta Pi in Med school. His internship and Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology was at Hermann Hospital in Houston. He opened a general practice in Wallis and later moved to Bellville. Dr. Justiss returned to Hermann Hospital for a residency and then practiced Ob-Gyn in Bellville until he retired in March of 1999. He served as past president of the Austin, Grimes, Waller counties Medical Society; served as Chief of Staff of the Bellville General Hospital; and served on the board of directors of the Bellville General Hospital and also on the board of the Bellville Hospital Foundation. He was instrumental in getting the hospital approved by the Joint Commission. He retired in March 1999. He was a licensed pilot and the family had many wonderful flying vacations. Dr. Justiss passed away on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 in Katy following a short illness at the age of 76. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Mildred Justiss and his brother John Dodson Justiss. He is survived by his wife Peggy Ruth Berry Justiss of Bellville; two children Jesse Edward Justiss, III of Bellville and David Berry Justiss and daughter-in-law Jennifer Chumas Justiss of Houston; his sister Myra Justiss Beach and brother-in-law Bernard A. Beach of Shreveport, La.; several nieces and nephews and brother-in-law, Raymond E. Berry and wife Sally Crook Berry of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Funeral Services under the direction of Knesek Bros.
