Lillie Mikeska Melcher was born Jan. 6, 1916 in Nelsonville. The daughter of John G. and Fannie Janowsky Mikeska, she was baptized and confirmed in the Nelsonville Brethren Church. She grew up and attended school in Nelsonville and Bellville, graduating from Bellville High School in 1934. Lillie then went to work as a beautician. On June 27, 1936, she married Rubin Melcher at the Nelsonville Brethren Church. Lillie and Rubin made their home in Bellville. An active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Lillie served in numerous capacities including Sunday school teacher, choir member and Past Vice President of the Mary's Circle. In 1947, Lillie opened Lillie's Beauty Shop which she owned and operated until her retirement in 1979. After her retirement, she continued work part-time in both nursing homes and also for Patsy's Beauty Shop. Rubin preceded her in death in 1984. Lillie enjoyed reading, quilting, playing cards and dominoes. She passed away Saturday. June 10. 2006 in Humble, Texas at the age of 90. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Jimmy Davis of Kingwood, Texas; sister-in-law Lillie Kurtz and her husband Melvin of Rosenberg; nephews Lenert Kurtz of Rosenberg and Lyndon Kurtz of Bryan; and many other dear friends and relatives. Lillie was a blessing to all whose lives she touched. She will be missed for the abundant love and gentle care she lavished on her family and friends. Heaven has gained a glorious angel. Funeral service was 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor David Henske and Pastor Jennie Jones officiating. Interment was in Oak Knoll Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lyndon Kurtz, Lenert Kurtz, Gus Davis, Tommy Davis, Norman Kiecke, Chase Kiecke, Robert Engelholm and Wilmont Syptak. Honorary pallbearers were Clarence King, Edgar Steinbach, Robert Beebe and Dick Crick. Posted by Joy Neely
