Priscilla Menke, age 88 of Hempstead, passed away on July 9, 2006. Mrs. Menke is preceded in death by her son Howard H. Menke; her husband, Theodore M. Menke; and brother, John Houston; and is survived by her former daughter-in-law, Jill Junek and her husband Tim; brothers, Joe Houston, and Harry Houston and wife Betty; nephew Charlie Menke and wife Ann; grandchildren, Matthew Menke and wife Janet, Sarah Junek, and Emily Junek; great grandchildren, Howard Kyle Menke, and Magnolia Menke; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Priscilla spent 56 of her 88 years in Waller County. Born and educated in Maine, she met her husband in Sampson. N.Y. while both were serving in the United States Navy during World War II. As a member of the Hempstead community, she served St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church on the vestry, as a Sunday school teacher, and baked countless turkeys for their annual bazaar. She was a founding member of the Waller County A&M Mother's Club and served in leadership roles with the Women's Study Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She will be remembered for her New England accent and sophistication, her steady sense of humor, and the gracious hospitality with which she served her family and friends. She loved her home and always told her family, "Well, they told me it was a mistake to move to Texas, but if I had it to do over, I'd make the same mistake again." Visitation was Monday, July 10, 2006 from 5-8 p.m. at Canon Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Services was Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 10 a.m. at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Hempstead. Interment followed at Hempstead Cemetery. Canon Funeral Home and Monument Co. in Waller was in charge of arrangements. Posted by Joy Neely
