HITCHCOCK< Dorothy Frances Burns Peterson, born September 7, 1921, in Bellville, Texas, the only daughter of Hattie Frances Buelow and Asa Samuel Burns and a fifth generation Texan, passed from this life Sunday evening, March 26, 2006. The Burns family moved from Austin County to Hitchcock in 1923, where her father was the Agent for the Santa Fe Railroad. Dorothy attended local schools in Hitchcock, graduated from Ball High School and held an Associate Degree in Art. Dorothy worked for Henckel Lumber Company for several years, was instrumental in establishing the First State Bank in Hitchcock and owned and operated her accounting firm, Commercial Business Service for 30 years. Dorothy was employed by NASA as a Management Assistant in the Budget Office and retired in 1988 after 25 years of dedicated service. Dorothy was an avid Genealogist and a member of local genealogical societies, which afforded her the time to trace her roots to the days of the Republic of Texas and the Battle of San Jacinto. Dorothy was an accomplished artist and the author of several Narratives of Historical Markers in Galveston County. She was also the author of a book, ³Military Presence in the l9th and 20th Century Galveston County, Texas². She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and served as President of the Sidney Sherman Chapter in Galveston. She held the office of National Recording Secretary General of the National Society level. For her ancestorıs service at San Jacinto, she served a two-year term as President General of that organization. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the Founding Regent of the Don Jose de Galvez Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonist in Galveston and is the immediate past State Regent for Texas. She had served as the Historian for the city of Hitchcock, served on the Hitchcock Library Board as well as the Hitchcock Heritage Society. Dorothy was awarded a Letter of Commendation by the Commissioners Court for her thirty years service to the Galveston County Historical Commission as Secretary. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Dorothy Diane and her husband, Paul W. Mallett, M.D.; grandson, Michael Andrew Loomis, III and her loving husband of 28 years, David Howard Peterson. Graveside services were conducted Friday, March 31, 2006, at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville, TX under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
