Verlin Schwenke, 88, of Kenney, died Jan. 4, 2006, in Trinity Care Center in Brenham. Mrs. Schwenke was born July 1, 1917, in Crawford, Texas, to Christian and Lena Honerkamp Mattiza. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Coryell City. She was educated in Crawford schools. On Dec. 8, 1934, she was married to Elmer Schwenke in Salem Lutheran Church of Salem. Mrs. Schwenke was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Phillipsburg. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Sandra Schwenke of Brenham; daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Otto Krause and Virgia Mae and Allan Wienecke, all of Bellville; six grandchildren, Keith Krause, Owen Krause and friend Buffie McLendon, Brian Krause and wife Beth, Lenny Krause and wife Debbie, Glenn Schwenke and wife Mary, and Terrell Schwenke; seven great-grandchildren, Justin Krause, Tanner Krause, Courtney Krause, Kendra Krause, Amy Bielstein and husband Sean, Slade Schwenke and Kaiden Schwenke; and 1 great-great-grandchild, Skylar Bielstein. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Arnold and Herbert Mattiza; sister, Vada Terrell and Hattie Pieper; and one great-grandchild, Lauren Krause. The family will receive visitors from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service was at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 in St. Paul Lutheran Church of Phillipsburg with Pastor Jennie Bohls officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Her great grandchildren and Ruth Ellis were considered honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Phillipsburg.
