Longtime well-known Sealy resident Julia Vera Vykoukal, 99, died February 25 at the Colonial Belle Nursing Home in Sealy. Services were conducted March 1 at Knesek Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was conducted at Sealy Immaculate Conception Church, followed by interment at Catholic cemetery. Julia, a harmonica player and spirited domino lover, was born June 10, 1906 in Frenstat, Texas, the daughter of Frank and Agnes Vykoukal. Her family moved to Sealy in 1921 where Julia finished her education and then went to work for her father as a bookkeeper in his business, the Vykoukal Gin Co. On August 16, 1927 Julia married Louis Zapalac and they made their home in Sealy for the rest of their lives. Julia and Louis were longtime small business owners, and when she wasn't waiting on customers in their Zapalac's Five and Ten Cent Store, she was busy being a homemaker and mother to her three sons, Louis, James and LeRoy. Julia was a member of the Sealy Immaculate Conception Church and the Catholic Daughters of America She also enjoyed the friendship of many nuns who taught at the parochial school and whom she enjoyed transporting back and forth between their convent and the local school at the beginning and end of the school year. She was active in Sealy bowling leagues and a trophy winner in Sealy domino tournaments. Vykoukal loved to travel and often visited her California family, usually bringing along a grandchild to enjoy the sights. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Joseph Zapalac; her parents: Frank and Agnes Vykoukal; five brothers: John Henry, Julius, Frank and Raymond Vykoukal; five sisters, Alvina Felcman, May Polansky, Minnie Pyka, Mollie Zapalac and baby Loretta Vykoukal. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Louis and Carolyn, James and Becky and Leroy and Susie; 8 grandchildren, Brian and wife, Jaime; Steve and wife, Kim; Erika, Kristen, John, Betsy and Tommy Zapalac, Beverly Zapalac Bell and husband, Kirk; 8 great-grandchildren, Stacy, Leslie, Keith, Jordon, Brady, Emily, Jeff and Carrie; two great-great grandchildren, Brandt and Ally; and many nieces and nephews.
