Engelking Funeral services for Nonie Engelking, 91, of Bellville were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7,2006 from the St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville with Pastors David Henske and Jennie Jones co-officiating. Interment was in Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville. Pallbearers serving were Eddie Baldwin, Kyle Schomburg, Richard Cornwall, Blake Cornwall, Chad Cornwall and Ray Schomburg. She was the oldest of eight children born to A.E. "Booty" Mewis and Martha (Berndt) Mewis on May 25,1915 in Bellville. She also had two half brothers and one half sister. She attended Coshatte School and Bellville High School. On July 4, 1936, she was united in marriage to Wm. G. "Kelly" Engelking at St. Mary's Episcopal Church by F.H. Stallknecht, Rector. Kelly was employed by Sinclair Oil Co. in the geophysical department. They moved often and Nonie was always ready to go with him. After seven years and the birth of two daughters, they returned to Bellville. They opened Kelly's Plumbing and Electric Service which they operated together for 32 years. Kelly preceded her in death in April of 1978. They were also in the rental business, which Nonie continued to run for the last years of her life. Nonie was active in many business and civic organizations. She served as president of the Austin County American Cancer Society for 22 years, and remained on the board. In 1993 she was elected to the Cancer Hall of Fame and in 2002 was elected a distinguished member of the Society. In 2003, she was given the Humanitarian Award by the Sons of Herman. She was a dedicated member of St. John Lutheran Church. She served on council and many church committees, was a lay reader, greeter, president of Mary Circle several times, and also held many other offices. Nonie was a loving wife and business partner, a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews and a friend to many. Nonie Mewis Engelking passed away on Feb. 4,2007 in Bellville. She is survived by her daughter Mary Ellen Schomburg and husband Ray; grandchildren Kathy Cornwall and husband Richard, Ed Baldwin and wife Melony and Kyle Schomburg and wife Kellie; great grandchildren Blake and Chad Cornwall, Austin and Paige Baldwin, and Nathan Schomburg and step-great-grandchildren Patrick and Ashley and one great-great granddaughter Hannah. She is also survived by sisters Flora Winn, Katie Huebner and husband Gilmore and sisters-in-law Mary Mewis and Alma Mewis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, parents Arthur Edward and Martha Mewis, in-laws, one infant son, and her daughter- and son-in-law, Martha Ann and James Baldwin, also brothers Monroe, Colbert, Leon, Roy, and Jesse and sisters Florence, Nola and Hazel.
