Well known and well loved businessman, family man, and long-time industrial supply provider, Morris Dean Groves, died July 22, 2007 at his home in Bellville, Texas, with his family at his side. Services were held at Bellville Church of Christ on Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at 10 a.m. followed by a grave side ceremony. A private visitation was held at the family home, Tuesday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Groves was born in Pharr, Texas in 1932 and he graduated from Mercedes High School in 1951. After attending the University of Texas in Austin, Texas A&I University and Pan American University, he began work at Briggs Weaver in Houston in 1953. Groves worked his way from the warehouse to become one of the company's most outstanding employees and managers. He eventually started three businesses including Industrial Paint and Supply Co., Industrial tool and Supply Corp. and Groves Industrial Supply Corp. which grew to become one of the largest independently owned industrial distribution companies in the Southwest. He led this company as CEO until May of 2006. Groves was known, appreciated and loved as an astute entrepreneur and inspirational leader for many employees. He was a state champion shot putter and discus thrower and college football tight end. He also enjoyed golf and tennis. Groves was an avid gardener, hunter, cook, carpenter, house builder, antique collector, electrician, plumber, coin and stamp collector, Rotarian and Lion's Club member and he was an active member of the Bellville Church of Christ. He will be remembered as a kind, sweet, dependable, father, husband, leader and friend. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Department; or the Hospice of Brenham; or Bellville Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Yates Groves; his father, nathan Marcellus Groves; and his brother, Malcolm N. Groves. He is survived in life by wife, Julia; daughter Julie Kerstan Webb; and his son, Morris Dean Groves Jr. and daughter-in-law, Caroline Groves; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friend.
