Ms. Shirley R. Kaase, retired special needs teacher in the Bellville (Texas) and Houston Independent School Districts, passed away April 9 in Lakeland, FL, due to respiratory failure from complications of diabetes. She was 67. Born Shirley R. Smith in Houston, Texas, Aug. 19, 1939, Ms. Kaase had moved to Florida four years ago from Colorado. She attended Eisenhower High School in Houston and gained her teachers aide accreditation before being assigned to special needs for children. She was with the Bellville and Houston ISD's for 23 years. Shirley was of the Lutheran faith. An extremely artistic woman, she loved to draw and enjoyed crafts with her students. She devoted her smile, time, hands and heart with everyone she came in contact with. Ms. Kaase had been suffering the affects of diabetes since a child and it began to take a toll on her at the age of 45. In lieu of flowers, please make all donations to the American Diabetes Association. She was a loving mother and will be missed. Ms. Kaase is survived by her mother, Ruby Smith, Brenham, TX; daughters, Karen Ott, Lakeland, FL and Kathy Stolper, Arvada, CO; a son, Kevin Kaase, Ruston, LA; a brother, Will Ed Smith, New Waverly, TX; and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at the Chapel of the Chimes, Brookside Memorial Park, 13401 Eastex Fwy., Houston, TX, 77039. Posted by Joy Neely
