September 9, 1999 page 4 A VFW Memorial Service was held for Lenard Sager at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 1999 at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Bellville with the Bellville VFW Post #6522 officiating. Following a private family interment at Oak Knoll Cemetery on Thursday, September 2, 1999, the Funeral Service was held at 3:00 P.M. at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastors Willie Rotter and Ann D. Ward officiating. Pallbearers were Marvin Sager, Lawrence Bade, Herbert Schumann, Robert Schumann, Ray Sager, and Paul Engeling. Lenard Otto Sager was born April 17, 1910 in Arneckeville, Tx, the son of C. A. Henry and Mary (Schorlerner) Sager. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Arneckeville. After graduating from high school, he attended Texas Lutheran College where he played football and baseball. It was at TLC that he met his future bride, Elma Kaauth. They were married September 10, 1933 in Granger, and made their home in Wahlberg where they both taught at the public school. Lenard was employed as principal and Elma was the school’s only teacher. Lenard began measuring acreage for cotton allotments for the Department of Agriculture. In 1941, he went to work full-time with the Department of Agriculture. He and Elma moved to Bellville in 1942. He became County Office Manager for the Agriculture Adjustment Administration. He was promoted to District Manager in 1964 retiring in 1973. He and Elma have been members of St. John Lutheran Church ever since their move to Bellville. Lenard served his country during World War II in the U. S. Army Infantry. Wounds suffered on the battlefield in Luxenbourg and a post operative infection caused the loss of his right leg, a handicap he admirably dealt with for the rest of his life. He was an avid leader in church and community affairs. He was a 50-year member of the Bellville VFW Post #6522 and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He helped organize an ensemble that brought music to local nursing home patients, volunteered with bookkeeping for St. John’s, and was a member of the congregation’s Men in Mission. He also served on the Church Council and as President of the congregation for 3 terms during the 1960’s. A member of the Bellville Lions Club, he was honored to be named Citizen of the Year in 1977. Lenard was very proud of and found great pleasure in his granddaughters. This past October he was especially pleased to have participated in the baptism of his great grandson, William McKinnerney. An avid deer hunter, he also enjoyed serving on the kitchen crew for various public barbecued. He passed away Monday, August 30, 1999 in a Houston hospital at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 13 days. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Elma Sager of Bellville; son, Harold Sager of Seguin; granddaughters, Ann McKinnerney and her husband, John, Elizabeth Don Carlos and her husband, Randy, all of Austin; great-grandson, William McKinnerney; brother, Oscar Sager of Arneckeville; sisters, Ellen Sager and Frieda Bade, both of Cuero, and Ruth Egg of Meyersville; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edwin and Paul Sager, and sisters Lena Koehler, Leona and Wilma Sager. In lieu of usual remembrances, friends who wish may make memorial gifts to St. John Lutheran Church, 520 N. Holland, Bellville, Tx 77418 or to Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, Tx 78155. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.
