WALTER4 PENNINGTON, b. December 1872, TEXAS; d. January 1902, BELLVILLE, AUSTIN COUNTY, TEXAS.
Notes for WALTER PENNINGTON:
Deaths - "Tragedy at Bellville" - Bellville, Jan. 24 - Three men dead, one
fatally shot and three slightly wounded is the result of a battle that occurred
at the Santa Fe depot here Wednesday at 6 p.m. The dead are: Raymond G. White,
Milam Odom of Wallis, Henry Dittert of San Felipe, and Walter Pennington of
Wallis is shot through the bowels and will die. His father, Elihu Pennington is
slightly wounded about the head. Antone Dittert, a liveryman of Bellville has a
flesh wound through his thigh. John Hackbarth, merchant of Sealy had the instep
of his foot crushed by a shot. It was a battle with six-shooters between Elihu
Pennington and his son, Walter Pennington, on one-side and Odom and his half-
brother Raymond White on the other. A large crowd was at the depot awaiting the
arrival of the southbound passenger train. The fight began in the midst of them
without warning and before the people could escape to places of safety, one of
their number was shot dead in his tracks and two others wounded by stray
bullets. The tragedy is the outgrowth of a killing which occurred at Wallis 2-
years ago, when Walter Pennington killed James C. Odom. Walter Pennington was
to have been tried for the killing but his case was continued. A large crowd of
citizens from Wallis and vicinity were here to attend the trial and the parties
to the feud were brought together at the depot while waiting for the train.

Shooting - On Wednesday of last week at 6 p.m. at the passenger depot at Bellville a shooting affray occurred that resulted in three deaths
on the spot; one mortally wounded and three more hurt, but not fatally. Sometime ago, Walter Pennington killed J. C. Odom and the case was set for trial in the district
court, Jan. 22nd. The deceased Odom has a brother, Milam (This first name was evidently misspelled in another article.) Odom and a half-brother Raymond White, who was
constable in the Wallis precinct. The parties met at the depot and while a large crowd was there waiting for the train. It is believed the shooting was begun by the Odom
faction. Pennington was the first man shot, the ball entering the stomach, and ranging upward, passed entirely through him. He drew his revolver after being shot and used
it with deadly effect, if reports are correct. Constable White fell dead, with his revolver ready to fire and near him Milam Odom fell dead. Henry Dittert, a bystander,
was also killed. Pennington shot 6-times, unloading every chamber of his revolver. Elihu Pennington received a scalp wound, Antone Dittert received a flesh would in the
side and John Havkath (Hackbarth as stated in one of the other articles. This must be misspelled) was shot in the foot. Elihu Pennington is the father of Walter
Pennington. The shooting was in the midst of the crowd, was unexpected and rapid. Those wounded and Henry Dittert, killed, took no part in the affray.
SHOOTOUT AT THE RAILROAD DEPOT
It was 6 in the evening in peaceful little Bellville, when all of a sudden shots rang out from the direction of the railroad depot.
Everyone started running down to see what was going on.
When they arrived they found the station and the street in front of it looking like a battlefield.
Three people lay dead, another mortally wounded. Several had been hit by stray bullets and the rail car of the Santa
Fe also had bullets in the side. Everyone was hiding or had run away.
Those dead were: Raymond White, deputy sheriff of Wallis, Milam Odom of Wallis and Henry Dittert of San Felipe (an innocent
bystander).
Dying (and, indeed, later succumbed), Walter Pennington.
Wounded were Elihu Pennington (father of Walter); Antone Dittert (bystander); John Hackworth (bystander).
Barely missed was a Mr. Hirsch from Sealy (Coat-tails shot).
And on the ground lay four six shooters, which had been emptied and now lay in testimony to how deadly a weapon it was.
It all grew out of another murder that had taken place in Wallis two years before. Walter
Pennington had been charged with the death of James C. Odom. It is believed that the continuance by the court, delaying the
trial, was the cause of the shoot-out.
It was two against two in the fight. Walter and Elihu Pennington against Milam Odom and his brother-in-law, Raymond White.
Poor Henry Dittert. As the paper said the next day, "He was a splendid young man in
every sense of the word. A devoted husband and father, a fast friend, a thrifty and prosperous citizen.
He had been called here to do jury duty and was on his way to his San Felipe home, when the messenger of death came suddenly out of a clear sky and took him hence. His wife and little one waited at the gate that night for his coming, but in his place came a messenger to tell them he was dead"
The only survivor of the feud was Elihu Pennington, who was charged with murder and taken to court, where he was fined $3,0000.
