Early settlers built a water tower on a closeby hill just outside of New Baden.
A well was dug and connected to a windmill to draw the water out.
Pipes fed the water collected in the tower to the new community at the bottom of the hill.
The rusting container at the top of the tower is barely visible in the clump of growth to the right in the picture below.

This faded 1980 photograph shows a little more detail of the old water tower.
