Servants of Dr. Horatio E. Pierce
A cemetery burial sheet on file at the Robertson County Library in Franklin states the following:
Doctor Horatio Pierce, who was a prominent physician who served the people of this area and also the citizens of Red Oak and Holly communities during the mid- to late-1800s. Dr. Pierce's headquarters were in the Cole's Branch settlement. Dr. Pierce, members of his family, and his servants were buried in this plot. The cemetery has been lost for many years. The Pierce Cemetery was situated on the L. D. Hager estate. Cam Lary, of Burnet, Texas, a grandson of the Hager's, formerly owned the land. No written records were kept. Mrs. Eula Dickey Weir, a Franklin resident familiar with the early history of this area, supplied the above information.
The following information was submitted by Linda McCanlies Sykes:
This is not my family, but I have an interest in it through the McCandlesses who were in Robertson Co. before 1860. This is what I have been told by family members, and a little bit of checking on records. No real concrete date, but this is information on people who MAY be buried in the Pierce Cemetery in Robertson Co. TX.
Horatio E. Pierce, b 1819 IL
1837 Unmarried, came to Texas (possibly Washington Co.?) with Earl Pierce & his 2nd wife, Hannah Buchard Pierce Horatio may be a son of Earl Pierce's first marriage. Or of Hannah, the 2nd wife, we do not know. Or some other relationship (nephew etc).
1848-9 Horatio E. Pierce married Martha Ellen Hume (family says in Limestone Co. TX.--I do not have a record).
1850 Census--They were in Robertson Co. --page 235
1850--Listed as an Early Pioneer of Navarro Co.
1850 Navarro Co. Census: p 32, #9
Horatio E. Pierce 31 Physician, Ind. (family said this was in error, should be IL)
Martha E 19 IL (maybe she was b Ind???)
Earl 57 m VT farmer (should be VA)
1855 Earl Pierce died in Robertson Co. Horatio was adm. of Earl's estate, and was also the auditor, received several things from the estate.
1860 I did not find them in the Robertson Co. census--maybe an oversight.
1870 Horatio Pierce died previous to 1870 "in an epidemic", and some of his children too, perhaps of other causes.
By 1880 Martha Ellen (wife) had died and more of the children. Only their last 4 daughters lived to maturity.
Children of Horatio and Mary Ellen Hume Pierce:
Earl R. b 1851 - before 1880
James H. b 1853 - before 1880
George Ripley b 1855 - before 1880
Susan Elizabeth b 1857 - before 1880
Martha C. b 1860 - before 1880
twin Etta Jane b 1862 m George Wolfrum
twin Louisa b 1862 m Mr. ? Phifer
Lucy A. b 1864 m Americus Callen
Ella b1866 m John Davis in Navarro Co. 1889
Both parents of these 9 children died bef 1880 and 5 children. Only the last 4 girls (who were under several different guardians after 1880) lived to maturity. This information from the family. I have not found records of the marriages, and I do not know where any of them are buried. Perhaps Pierce Cemetery.Notes on Earl Pierce:
Earl Pierce (b 1793 VA, d 1855 Robertson Co. TX) came to TX ~1837 as a family man, married abt 1820? IL to Hanna Buchard (his 2nd wife). By one of his wives he had Minerva Adoline Pierce (b 1830 IL), who m David Posey McCanless 10 Dec 1848 Robertson Co. TX. Earl was listed twice in the 1850 census, once in Robertson Co. and once in Navarro Co. Neither record includes his wife Hanna(h). She may have died before 1850.
Earl Pierce was some kin to a family of Kellogs in Pike Co. IL.
In the 1850 census of Robertson Co TX, p 235 HH #81:
Earl is not with his family but is with a man named Kelough.
[SB or LB Kellough 45 farmer TN, Annette 27 IL, Nancy 5, Lucy E 3, Annette 9/12. Chn b TX.]
In 1860 Pct 3. p 167 HH #33 there are more children in this family (and Lucy is now Sarah 12): Henry 7, Charles C 4, and Isaac 2.
Do not know if Earle and his wife are buried in Pierce's Cemetery in Robertson Co., but Earl(e) Pierce died in 1855 in Robertson Co. I do not have a death date or place for Hannah Burchard PIERCE.
