Hilton Location: Travel 5 miles from the court house on State Hwy 147 north. Turn left on FM 1279 (Bland Lake Road); go 1.2 miles; turn left in driveway. The cemetery is located beyond the house to the left about a quarter of a mile. The cemetery is located on land which John J. Saunders received in 1838. He was the father-in-law of O.H.P. Bodine, Sr. Oliver Hazard Perry Bodine, Sr., for whom this cemetery is named, was the son of John Bodine, Sr. and Nancy Gunnels. He was named for the U.S. Navy Commander, whom his father had served under on Lake Erie during the War of 1812. O. H. P. Bodine, Sr. was born in 1819 in Georgia. He emigated to Texas in 1825 with his father and mother. He was married on September 6, 1841 in San Augustine County to Mary Ann Saunders, born 1821, in South Carolina. She was the daughter of John Adn Sarah Saunders. O. H. P. Bodine, Sr. enlisted in the Summer of 1836 in Captain William Kimbro's Company and served under Captain H. W. Augustine during the Cordova Rebellion, 1838, and was in the Mexican War in 1846 in the Company of Otis M. Wheeler. O. H. P. Bodine, Sr. died in 1889 and was buried in this family cemetery. His wife Mary Ann Saunders Bodine died a year later and was buried by her husband. There are 15 monuments in this cemetery and an undetermined number of unmarked graves. Information is only know on nine of the unmarked graves. The monuments of Charles and Sarah Epps have since been added. |
