Twenty-five year old Lewie Clark who died in 1875 was the first to be buried on the fifty acres then owned by Farrell Reilly, his uncle.  22 Oct 1855, Farrell Reilly purchased 50 acres of land for $150 from his brother Bernard Reilly.  In May, 1878, W. W. Wallace and J. B. Johnson obtained a judgment against Farrell and Mary Reilly.  To satisfy the judgment a sheriff's sale was held with Patrick Smith and S. W. Blount being the highest bidders at $50. In December of  1882, Patrick Smith became the sole owner of the fifty acres when he bought out Blount’s interest for $100. Patrick Smith deeded the land to Nicholas Aloysius Gallagher, Bishop Administrator of Galveston Catholic Church on 15th May  1889. Patrick Smith married Mary Poole Reilly 7 July 1874 in San Augustine.  Mary was the adopted daughter of Farrell and Mary Reilly.  Originally the cemetery was for Smith family members, but in later years other Catholics have been interred here.
