Born in Virginia about 1775, John Chumley moved his family
to Arkansas before emigrating to Texas in March 1826. John
in about 1804 married Delilah Russell who was born 1790 in
North Carolina. John received a First Class Headright in
January of 1838 in San Augustine County.
John and two of his sons, Thomas and Armstead Chumley
enlisted in Captain Thomas S. McFarland’s Company on 4th
of July 1836.
When Delilah passed away she was laid to rest near their
home site. John joined her in 1859 and their son Alex in
1861. The wooden crosses which marked their graves have
long been gone. The cemetery today is enclosed in a chain
link fence on private property.
