Printed with permission of the San
Augustine Public Library Board of Directors. Originally
contributed by the late Dr. J. M. Martin and his wife McXie Whitton
Martin and the late Mrs. Sallie Richards Whitton. Genealogical data was
provided by Mrs. Villa Mae Morehead Davis Williams and Mrs. McXie
Whitton Martin.
Location: Travel 7.7 miles from the court house on FM 711. The cemetery is located to the right, about 135 feet off the highway on top of the hill in the woods. It is situated to the east of the present African American Greer Cemetery, about 45 feet from the chain link fence. The old Greer homeplace once stood west of the cemetery on a hill among the very large oak trees. The only visable signs in the cemetery is one grave that is covered with large pieces of slab chimney rock, with a pile of loose pieces of chimney rock on top, this was probably at one time, head and foot markers to other graves, but in years past, they were all placed in one pile. The names and data of members of the Greer family know to be buried here is based on records and tradition. There may have been others that are not known. John Alexander Greer was reinterred in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas December 8, 1929 |
