Printed with permission of the San
Augustine Public Library Board of Directors. Originally
contributed by the late Ruby and C. T. Dorsey.
Location: About 4 miles east of San Augustine. Turn left on the lane that leads to the old Charlie Smith far, about 7/10th of a mile. The cemetery is located about 1.5 miles through the pasture on a high hill right out of Palo Gauche bottom. At the time of the original indexing the land was owned by R. M. Griffis. He is the grandson of Charles and Mollie Nash Smith. The story told is Mr. Nash broke his leg in the summer of 1893. It was very hot so the family moved his bed out on the back porch where the cool summer breeze would keep him cool. He never recovered from this injury. From his bed on the back porch, Mr. Nash could see the hill with beautiful trees on it. He picked this hill for his burial place. There is only one monument in the old Nash cemetery. There are probably two other graves. One is thought to be an infant of Charles and Mollie Smith. The other is not known. |
