Turn left on the old Calgary Road at the railroad track. Travel .2 to the fork, keep left; go .2 mile cross the railroad track. .3 to another fork, keep left, .4 to a tri-fork, keep straight, go .3 mile. The Whitton cemetery is located on the right. At one time this was the old Whitton home place. There is a large rod iron gate with a 10 foot arch over it with the inscription "Whitton Cemetery". This was erected by Mrs. Lela Whitton Hagarty in 1963. The acres of land have been reserved for the cemetery. The first person to be buried in the Whitton Cemetery was John Jasper Whitton, born 30 January 1851 in Rusk County, Texas. He died 25th July 1865 at the home of his mother and father where the cemetery is now located. John Jasper had planted a red rose bush in the southwest corner of the yard, and his parents, William and Lydia Whitton, thought it would be befitting to bury him by the rose bush, thus began the Whitton Cemetery. There are 10 graves in the Whitton Cemetery that have monuments. 39 unmarked graves can be counted. The identity is known on seven of these graves. Several other graves are members of the Enoch Whitton family and the Rivers and Chance Families. Names of the remaining graves have long been forgotten. They are not members of the William Washington Whitton Family buried in unmarked graves, they have all been accounted for. The Baggett brothers were killed when lightning struck them, 30 July 1912. |
