Lafayette Massey, Sr.
JOHN
LAFAYETTE MASSEY, SR. was born in Montgomery, Alabama on February 24,
1925 and passed away on July 10, 2012 in The Woodlands, Texas at the age
of 87.
While growing up in Montgomery, Alabama he was a Boy Scout and played
morning reveilles in the community park. John joined the United
States Navy in
1943 at the age of 17. He served in the European African Theater,
American Area and Asiatic Pacific as a signalman. After a honorable
discharge in 1946 with the rank of Quartermaster Signalman Second Class
he met his future wife, Dannie Jeane Pope at The Montgomery Advertiser
where he was serving his internship in stereotyping for the newspaper.
John and Jeane were married in 1947. As a journeyman stereotype, John
and Jeane settled in Houston in 1956 and raised their five children.
After his craft of stereotyping was phased out due to new technology
John went back to school and received his Real Estate Broker license
which he worked until retirement.
John was a member of the Methodist Church.
In 1962 he was installed as a Mason and was an active member for 50
years. John served as Master of Park Place Lodge #1172 and Sagemont
Lodge of Houston. He was Affiliated Past Master of San Jacinto Lodge
#106 of Willis, TX and Conroe Lodge #748. John was a member of the Clan
Maxwell Society of the United States of America, U. S. Navy Armed Guard,
American Legion of Willis, VFW of
Conroe, and Disabled American Veterans. John researched and published a
book of the history of Willis, TX which can be found in the Genealogy
Section of the Montgomery County Historical Society.
John and Jeane recently celebrated 65 years of marriage.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeane Pope Massey; children, Kathy
Sanders and husband Steve, John Massey, Jr. and wife Therisa, Pat Morris
and husband Gerald, Merry Young and husband Frank, Laurie Brantley and
husband Craig; grandchildren, Jimmy Bounds, Heather Kfoury and husband
Daniel, Gerald Morris, Jr., Christie Brantley and Julia Massey; sister,
Margaret Pritchett of Nashville, TN along with other relatives and
friends.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM on Friday, July 13, 2012 in the Chapel
of Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home with funeral services
following at 10:00 AM. Interment in Forest Park The Woodlands Cemetery.
Pallbearers and Masonic Rites performed by San Jacinto Lodge # 106 of
Willis following chapel services. Military Honors performed by American
Legion Post 618 of Willis, Texas
