Funeral services for J. L. "Mac" McCullough, 93, of Conroe will be held on
Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 at 7 p.m. in the Conroe High School Auditorium with
Mr. Steve Yates officiating. Private family graveside services will be held
on Friday, Sept. 5, 2003 in Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled
for Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 from 5 to 9 p.m. in Cashner Funeral Home. Mr.
McCullough was born on Aug. 21, 1910, in Stanton, Texas and passed away on
Sept. 2, 2003, in Conroe, Texas. He served his country in the U. S. Air
Force during World War II. He worked at Conroe I.S.D. for 50 years in the
capacity of teacher, football coach, principal and superintendent. He was a
longtime member of the Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Award.
He was a member of the City Council. His first wife of over 50 years,
Eleanor McCullough, preceded him in death. He is survived by his second
wife, Myrtle McCullough, of Conroe; daughters, Margaret Ann McCullough Yocum
and husband Jim of Conroe, Kay Camillo and husband Pat of Conroe, Sarah
Carlin and husband Cliff of Conroe, Nora Cagle and husband Pete of
Grangerland, and Candy Bradley and husband Dave of Willis; sons, James
Lawrence McCullough and wife Elizabeth of Morgantown, NC, and Robert Shaw
and wife Sharon of Kingsville; 27 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren.
Numerous other relatives and friends also survive. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that donations be made in his name to McCullough Scholarship
Fund at Conroe I.S.D., Frazier Street Church of Christ Camp Bandina, or to
the Gathering Place at First United Methodist Church of Conroe. You are

New school to be named for Cryar

During
his 43 years as a teacher, coach and principal in the Conroe Independent
School District, Harold Cryar taught thousands of children.
|
Now,
thousands more will be learning in a new intermediate school in Conroe that
will bear his name.
CISD trustees approved the naming of the school, located at 2375 Montgomery
Park Boulevard, after Cryar during a special meeting Tuesday night.
The school will open in August of 2004.
After the unanimous vote, brought on by a motion by trustee Alan Moore, CISD
Superintendent Don Stockton said, "What a wonderful choice. Thank you."
Cryar is a "fine gentleman" who dedicated his whole life to CISD, Stockton
said. "I just always appreciate Mr. Cryar's understanding and care for
children. He really does understand kids and education.
"He's very, very knowledgeable."
It was Stockton who made the call after Tuesday's vote to Cryar to let him
know about the school's naming. "I was taken aback," Cryar said. "I said,
'That is one of the greatest honors you can bestow on me after having worked
some 43 years in the district.'"
The thought of children attending Harold Cryar Intermediate School gives
Cryar an "eerie" feeling, but "I certainly hope the people running the
school will be having as enjoyable a stay as I did in the district."
After spending 31 years in education, with 28 of those in CISD, Cryar ran
for and won a seat on the district's board of trustees. He served there for
16 years.
"A major part of Mr. Cryar's life is his true dedication to our district,"
said board president Ann Snyder, who served with Cryar for several years.
"He has served thousands of young people, ensuring our district is the best
of the best.
"Simply, he left a legacy."
Cryar and his wife Caroline, who taught for 31 years in CISD, are now
enjoying their retirement. "I do a lot of 'honey-dos,'" he laughed. Cryar is
also involved with the Conroe Rotary Club and is a board member of the
Conroe Symphony Orchestra.
Students at Harold Cryar Intermediate School should expect to see Cryar in
the classrooms. "I think I'll be there quite often, if they'll let me," he
said.
"It's such an honor, I wouldn't miss it." |
