Sarah Whitaker Pillow
My cousin and I have recently
had a stone placed in Tillis Prairie Cemetery in memory of our gr gr
grandmother, Sarah Whitaker Pillow. She died in 1863 and was the
mother of three Confederate soldiers, who were serving at the time of
her death. The three younger children were given homes with the
neighbors in the Tillis Prairie area. Her brother Alexander
Whitaker lived just south of the cemetery and had the stagecoach stop
between Houston and Huntsville. He preceded her in death and is
probably buried there also. We have a family record saying that
Sarah was buried in Mostyn Cemetery (Tillis Prairie).
|
Please enter her
data on the cemetery information and record me as a contact if anyone is
interested in researching the family. Her tombstone reads: |
Sarah Whitaker Pillow
May 11, 1815 - Nov. 1863
Wife of William Barton Pillow
|
Thank you for all
you do for the Montgomery Society.

Tillis Prairie Cemetery is located thirteen miles south of Montgomery
and is east of Magnolia. The cemetery is known as Mostyn Cemetery for
the early burials there in the late 1850s. Sarah Pillow was buried there
in 1863. A memorial marker has been placed there, for the actual
location of the burial plot has been lost.
A stagecoach stop was located on the south side of the cemetery. It
served the stagecoach route from Houston to Huntsville and was owned by
Alex Whitaker, brother of Sarah Pillow. Alex lived there with his family
and rented rooms to travelers. On one occasion, a posse of men followed
brothers who were participants in the war in Shelby County and found one
of the men in bed with the sheriff. One of the fellows was the brother
in law to Alex Whitaker.
