On August 6, 1800 a Henry County, Kentucky tax assessment listed a John Lewis on Bare Bone Creek.
On August 6, 1800 a Henry County tax assessment also listed John LeMasters; the father of Emma and Sarah LeMasters.
In the 1804 tax assessment for Henry County a John Lewis and John Lewis Jr were listed on Bare Bone Creek.
On August 7, 1804 Samuel Lewis married Sarah LeMasters in Henry County.
In the 1805 tax assessment for Henry County John Lewis, John Lewis Jr., Samuel Lewis, Jesse Lewis, and Joel Lewis were listed on Bare Bone Creek.
In the 1806 list of delinquent taxes for Henry County John Lewis, John Lewis Jr., and Samuel Lewis were listed with the notation of “ Gone to Ohio”.
On Jan 13, 1806 Martin Baty Lewis was born in Orange County, Indiana to Samuel Lewis and Sarah LeMasters.
In the 1820 census of Orange County, Indiana there were listings for John Lewis on page 124, John Lewis on page 132, Samuel Lewis on page 131, and William Lewis on page 129.
On page 109 of the Character Certificates in the General Land Office of Texas, Samuel S Lewis and family, Martin Baty Lewis and family, and John Thomas Lewis are listed as
applying for citizenship on April 13, 1835. Also listed on the same page is Loreno Taylor Lewis, a widow with two children. On page 180 is listed John Taylor, a native of
Tennessee, a single man. Owen Taylor was listed on this page as a native of Georgia with a family of six persons.
John Taylor was Loreno Taylor’s brother and Owen Taylor was her father. John Taylor was at the battle of Bexar along with Samuel S Lewis and Martin Baty Lewis.
Lereno (Leurainy) Taylor Lewis was born in Tennessee 1811. She died 11 May 1858 Jasper County, Texas. Her two children were: William Michael Lewis born 1831, Texas and Minerva
Ann Lewis born 1834, Texas. So far I have traced LeurainyTaylor’s family back to George William Taylor, born 1759 Cumberland County, Virginia, died 1843 Madison County, Virginia.
His wife was Hannah Jennings.
Several other Ancestry sites have Leuainy’s first husband as William Lewis, born 1811, Indiana and died 1835, Texas. I have yet to find any records of this.
If this is true William Lewis was likely Samuel S Lewis’ grandson of John, James or another.
Side note: Leuainy’s second husband was John Benjamin Allen. He was the 3rd great grandfather of Sam Allen, the owner of the farm next to ours in Call, Texas.
I recently had a mtDNA test through family tree DNA. This is the DNA passed down through the mother. Several of the matches were of the Martin family name. Two of these
leadback to the John Martin family. This John Martin is connected to the David Lewis line as shown below. In the Samuel Lewis family the Martin and Taylor names shows up
numerous times: Martin Baty Lewis and John Taylor Lewis.
David Lewis was born in New Kent County, Virginia in 1695. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1779.
His first wife was Ann Elizabeth Terrell & they had 8 children: William Terrell 1718, Susannah 1720, Hannah 1722, Sarah 1724, David 1726, John Terrell 1728, Joel 1728, Ann 1732.
William Terrell Lewis, son of David Lewis married Sarah Martin, daughter of James Martin.
John Terrell Lewis married Sarah Taliaferro.
His second wife was Mary McGarth and they had 3 children: Elizabeth Lewis, James Martin Lewis & Miriam Lewis.
Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of David Lewis and Mary McGarth was living with Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor after the death of her parents. Mrs. Taylor’s maiden name was Lewis, perhaps the widow
of John Lewis, son of David Lewis and Ann Elizabeth Terrell and brother of Elizabeth Lewis. In 1775 Elizabeth Lewis married Major John Martin, born in Albemarle County, Virginia1749.
They had 7 children: Thomas Martin 1776, John Lewis Martin 1779, James Taylor Martin 1784, George Madison Martin 1785, Robert Brooks Martin 1788, Samuel Davis Martin 1791, Elizabeth
Catherine Martin 1798.
Samuel Davis Martin married Elizabeth Taylor 1812 Clark County, Kentucky.
