SHELBY SHINES IN WASHINGTON FAMILY HISTORY

The population of Shelby County makes a proud appearance in two newly released books The Washingtons: A Family History, Volumes One and Two. The author is Justin Glenn, Ph.D., retired Professor of Classics at Florida State University, who is himself a distant cousin of George Washington and the Registrar of The National Society of the Washington Family Descendants. Forty years in the making, the books are the first of a projected ten volume, fifteen-generation family history that begins with the immigrant John Washington, who settled in Virginia in 1657 and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington.

The entire work will eventually include over 63,000 direct descendants of the immigrant John Washington. In addition to George Washington himself, these also include such notables as General George S. Patton, the actor Lee Marvin, and the author Shelby Foote.

The recently released Volume One carries the family down for a total of seven generations and includes over 5,000 direct descendants. Newly released Volume Two collects some of the most interesting and historic members of the Washington family, including General George S. Patton, the author Shelby Foote, and the actor Lee Marvin.

The book, now coming out in a hardcover edition, is also available in a low-cost Kindle edition. Volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the Kindle edition have already appeared. The books may be ordered from the publisher Savas Beatie or from Amazon.com, and personally signed copies are available directly from the author.

Shelby County looms large in the multi-volume book thanks to Elder William Brittain, who married Washington descendant Rosanna Brittain. This pioneer couple settled in Shelby County in 1837, and their prolific descendants will eventually comprise about one thousand entries in Glenn’s entire book. Some of the most common surnames in this Brittain branch of the Washington family are Corbell, Haley, Latham, Monroe, Risinger, Schooler, Scruggs, Watson, and Wilburn.

Dear Family and Friends,

I’m glad to report that the hardcover edition of Volumes 1 and 2 of my book The Washingtons: A Family History is finally available for orders.

The publisher has decided to issue these volumes initially as a limited edition, “First printing, first edition.” Fewer than 500 will be printed, so they will be quite rare. A small shipment of advance copies of these first printing books recently reached me at Mount Vernon just in time for the Washington Family Descendants convention. I was able to sell most of them there, and another batch of this limited edition is on its way to me and is scheduled to arrive within a few days.

Volumes 1 and 2 of the hardcover limited edition, then, are definitely available from me (now) and will be available soon from the publisher (the official publication date is announced as Jan. 2015 on the Savas Beatie website). A small quantity of this limited edition may also be available for the first customers who order from Amazon.com – that’s unclear at this point.

Both volumes are large, thick ten-inch books (most books are seven inches), which (I hope) helps to explain the retail price of $85 per book plus shipping (when purchased from the publisher Savas Beatie). I am now selling signed copies of this limited edition “first printing” for $75 per book, and this includes shipping. Please send a personal check made out to “Justin Glenn,” specifying which volume(s) you would like and please tell me to whom you would like me to inscribe each book (if you would like me to sign it). Please include your phone number and (if available) email address, and please send your check and order to:

The publisher Savas Beatie is now taking orders for volumes 1 and 2. The cost is $85 per volume plus shipping ($4.50 for the first book and $2.50 for each additional book). The address is:

Amazon.com is also taking pre-publication orders for volumes 1 and 2 hardcovers and has announced a publication date of Jan. 19, 2015. The price will be about $55. The publisher has suggested that I ask everyone to please be patient when ordering the books from Amazon.com: “Amazon will not keep them in stock until a decent demand is demonstrated, so there may be a delay in ordering and receiving.” Amazon.com also offers for sale the low-cost Kindle edition of volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4. Please help spread the word about this book by forwarding this email to any relatives who may have an interest in the family history.

Finally, I want to thank profoundly those who have taken the time and trouble to post 5-star reviews on Amazon.com. Those are extremely important and one of the main reasons that my publisher is now strongly inclined to issue all of the volumes as hardcovers. To keep the momentum going in that direction: if you read a volume and like it, please post a favorable review on Amazon.com. The Volume 4 Kindle has been out for about five weeks and has not received any reviews at all. Volumes 2 and 3 havevery few reviews, so (if you actually read any of those books and like them!), please take a couple of minutes to post a favorable review on Amazon.com.

Gratefully,

Justin

VOLUMES ONE AND TWO:

This two-volume set begins a comprehensive, nine volume (plus one volume index), fifteen-generation history that traces the “Presidential line” of the Washingtons. Volume one begins with the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington. This volume continues the story of John and Anne’s family for a total of seven generations, collecting over 5,000 direct descendants. Future volumes will trace eight more generations with a total of over 63,000 descendants.

Volume two highlights the most notable descendants and spouses from the later volumes, including such luminaries as General George S. Patton, the author Shelby Foote, and the actor Lee Marvin. Although structured in a genealogical format for the sake of clarity, this is no bare bones genealogy but a true family history with over 1,200 detailed biographical narratives. These in turn strive to convey the greatness of the family that produced not only The Father of His Country but many others, great and humble, who struggled to build that country.

The Washingtons includes the time-honored John Wright line which in recent years has been challenged largely on the basis of DNA evidence. Volumes one and two will form a set, with a cumulative bibliography appearing at the end of volume 2.

ADVANCE PRAISE for The Washingtons: A Family History

“I am convinced that your work will be of wide interest to historians and academics as well as members of the Washington family itself.

Although the surname Washington is perhaps the best known in American history and much has been written about the Washington family for well over a century, it is surprising that no comprehensive family history has been published. Justin M. Glenn’s The Washingtons: A Family History finally fills this void for the branch to which General and President George Washington belonged, identifying some 63,000 descendants. This is truly a family history, not a mere tabulation of names and dates, providing biographical accounts of many of the descendants of John Washington who settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1657. . . . Each individual section is followed by extensive listings of published and manuscript sources supporting the information presented and errors of identification in previous publications are commented upon as appropriate.”

John Frederick Dorman, editor of The Virginia Genealogist (1957-2006) and author of Adventurers of Purse and Person

“Decades of reviewing Civil War books have left me surprised and delighted when someone applies exhaustive diligence to a topic not readily accessible. Dr. Glenn surely meets that standard with the meticulous research that unveils the Washington family in gratifying detail—many of them Confederates of interest and importance.”

Robert K. Krick, author of The Smoothbore Volley that Doomed the ConfederacyStonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain, and Lee’s Colonels
