SHELBY'S OLDEST RESIDENT PASSES AWAY AT SALEM

Funeral services were held at Salem Sunday at 11 a.m. for Mrs. CELINA BUTTS, 101 years of age, who died at the home of Jodie Wheeler, a son-in-law with whom she lived.  Death followed a short illness.  Funeral services were under the direction of the Mangum Undertaking Company with the Rev. J. M. Sigler officiating.  The deceased is survived by three brothers.  Mack, Eli, and Jim W. Webb.  One sister, Mrs. Jennie McDonald of Nacogdoches county, also survives. Mrs. Butts was one of the most colorful figures in the history of East Texas.  Her romantic story begins with her advent into Texas as a six week's old infant in 1834.  Her father, Merideth Webb, was one of the pioneers who settled at Shelbyville when Texas was still a province of Mexico.  A vivid panorama of history ranging from conflicts with Indians through the War for Texas Independence, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War and the World War, have passed before her eyes and have been a part of her experience.  Shelby County's story has been an open book to her.  Mrs. Butts was first married to John Hamm who died soon after the close of the Civil War in which he took part.  His death was due to the hardships undergone during the war.  Later she was married to Andrew Butts, who died in 1914.  She has been a member of the church at Salem for 69 years and has lived in the same community for a longer time.  Mrs. Webb was acitve in her work about the place until the age of 95 when her sight became impaired.  She gave up the active pursuit of housekeeping and went to live with ther daughter.  The funeral service was attended by a host of friends and relatives.
