This section is an internet memorial for the patriotic citizens of
Austin County, Texas who have responded to the calls of their nation.
Some responded by registering for the draft. Many gave weeks, months,
years of service. Many suffered and many gave body parts or lives. We
must never forget their sacrifices. To recognize our military members as well as the hard efforts of the Patriots that keep
the spirits high.
Thanks to volunteers who gathered more names while placing flags on graves for Memorial Day. Please help us to include all the veterans and other patriots of Austin County.
Thanks to Carolyn Zaskoda for her many hours of research in order to add additional information to this website.
Veterans day commemorates Armistice Day at the end of World War I. As of 2024, there are 15.8 million veterans alive in the US, a figure representing 6.1% of the adult US population. Veterans have served during wartime and in peacetime, with roughly one-third having served in the Vietnam War, one-quarter in the Gulf War, and 28% serving since 9/11. The percentage of veterans alive who served in World War II is less than 0.2%. While the vast majority of veterans are US citizens, citizenship is not a prerequisite for enlistment; as of 2015, noncitizens made up less than 1% of veterans. There are no known living veterans from World War I; the last known US soldier from that war was laid to rest in 2007.
We must thank the previous coordinators, Joy, Steve and Linda for all the hard work and hours they have put into this project. TXGenWeb needs more volunteers like them so if you are interested contact us. Our thanks to Joy Neely who compiled most of this military information. Our sincere appreciation for her ongoing efforts to supply genealogical data to us all! After 2018, other sources were used to update this section.
