Gabrys, Erich Emil (1944-2024)

USFlag[Veteran] Vietnam, 2LT, USMC [Family] Father: Emil Gabrys, Mother: Hilda Marie, Spouse: Alice Pozzi [Cemetery] Guardian Angel Cemetery (Mausoleum)

Erich was born to Hilda Marie and Emil Gabrys on May 7, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. He spent his first two years living with his mother and grandparents while his father was stationed at Kelly Field in San Antonio, with the United States Army Air Corps.

In 1946, the entire family was deployed to Furth, Germany during the U.S. occupation. His family lived in a German neighborhood and the living was good, since both his parents spoke fluent German. When the USSR threatened Berlin, the entire family moved back to Texas. Emil was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base near Austin, and the family eventually moved to base quarters when they were completed. In 1954, Emil bought a home just outside the base and they lived there until 1963 when Emil retired from the United States Air Force and moved back to Dearborn, Michigan where employment, particularly in the automotive industry, was excellent.

Erich attended the Del Valle School System from the third grade until his graduation in 1962. Erich was an honor student and captain of his football team. He was chosen all district in 1961 and 1962 and was voted area player of the week in 1961 for his defensive efforts in defeating a good Marble Falls team. He also ran the 220 (placed 3rd in his senior year) and on the winning 440 and mile relay teams.

Following graduation, Erich accepted a Naval ROTC scholarship to the University of Minnesota. One week before the beginning of classes, Erich boarded an airplane in Austin and flew alone to Minneapolis. He had never been to Minneapolis but found a cab and asked to be taken to a motel near the university. The next day was Sunday, and with a school map, he found the major buildings. On Monday, he found a fraternity that was renting rooms for $30 per month, and the local church had a full-service cafeteria for $40 per month. After finding food and shelter, the rest was easy.

In June 1966, Erich graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science Degree that qualified him to teach secondary mathematics, chemistry, and physics and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. After completing The Basic School training (TBS) in Quantico, Virginia, Erich attended the Artillery Officer Basic School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following Artillery School, Erich was assigned to Whiskey Battery 1/13 where he served as Fire Direction Officer and later as Executive Officer. Whiskey Battery was initially deployed on Hills 881 and 861 outside of Khe Sanh, Vietnam. Following a brief operation, the battery was then divided between Hill 861 and the main base at Khe Sanh.

Following his Vietnam deployment, Erich returned to The Basic School and served as a Staff Platoon Commander for two companies and later as the M-60 machine gun instructor. He then attended the Artillery Officer Career Course in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In January 1971, he was assigned as Commanding Officer of Echo Battery 2/12 stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Echo Battery was deployed to Fuji, Japan for three months. He later participated as part of a Battalion Landing Team (BLT) deployment afloat in the South China Sea. In December 1971, Erich resigned his Captain’s Commission and enrolled at Southwest Texas State University where he received a Masters in Secondary Education in 1973. It was during this time he met his wife, Alice Pozzi. They were married on July 12, 1975, in Victoria, Texas.

From 1973 through 1978, Erich taught high school physics, chemistry, and mathematics at Rice Consolidated High School for four years and one year at Katy High School before joining Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas. For the next twenty-three years, he worked in Information Systems at Shell Oil Company, retiring in 2001 as a Senior Consultant. His final assignment from 1995-2001 was the most challenging. He and three other consultants were the first Shell employees to implement the German developed software system, SAP (Systems Analysis Program). SAP is now used as a standard by many companies to perform their purchasing, sales, depreciation, and financial processing. Erich’s final two years involved implementing SAP at Shell facilities in the UK, the Netherlands, Australia, and the U.S. This provided Erich with the opportunity to work with consultants from many different countries and to make several trips to the Hague, Netherlands.

His wife Alice, retired in 2006 after working thirty-three years as a kindergarten teacher – a tough tour, but tremendously rewarding. Since retirement, Alice and Erich have been very active in their local church, Guardian Angel Catholic Church, Wallis, Texas; the Wallis American Legion and Erich with the Knights of Columbus, serving two years (2002-2004) as Grand Knight for Council #3793 in Wallis. Always interested in continuing his education, Erich completed his Master of Liberal Arts in 2009, from Houston Baptist University. Alice and Erich currently reside in Fulshear (approximately forty miles west of Houston). Alice and Erich no longer run long distances, but they both remained active cycling, walking, and playing golf two or three times per week until the last few years.

Erich and Alice have also been fortunate to take several extended vacations in the UK in 1995 and 2005. They also toured Italy for two weeks and two years later Spain for two weeks. However: the most enjoyable tour was the water cruise down the Rhine River that included the countries of Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands. In 2016, they were fortunate to take a tour to the Holy Land with their parish priest. Father Thuy, and twenty-four members of the congregation.

Erich continued to serve as the American Legion Post 200 Finance Officer since 2009 and the Bingo Chairman since 2016.

Erich was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Hilda Gabrys. He is survived by his wife Alice; his brother, Edward Gabrys and wife, Elizabeth; his sister, Wilma Gabrys; nephew, Michael Gabrys and wife, Giovanna; niece, Laura Gabrys Turner and husband, Garrett; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Pozzi and brother-in-law, Richard Pozzi and wife, Bec.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wallis American Legion Post 200 (P.O. Box 730, Wallis, TX 77485) or Guardian Angel Catholic Church (P.O. Box 487, Wallis, TX 77485).

Garza, Manuel (1972-2022)

[Family] Spouse: Angelica Herrera Ramirez [Cemetery] Sealy Cemetery , FG

Manuel Garza, age 49, peacefully passed away at home on August 11th, 2022. He was born on October 19, 1972 in Sealy Texas where he also married his wife, Angelica Herrera Ramirez, raised his two daughters, Angela and Alexis Garza, and spoiled his granddaughter, Dayalina A. Torres Garza.

Manuel was a caring, fun, helpful and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, a proud father that made sure to be present for all of his daughter's events. Also supported his wife through everything.

Manuel owned his own tire shop for a few years before he started working in Pattison, TX in HDH Instrumental as a machinist for over a decade. He made many friends there and loved what he did before he had to retire early due to his illness.

Manuel accepted Jesus Christ as his savior in 2008 and since then had made sure to spread His word and do missionary work with the church, taking what they can to indigenous places in Mexico and other places. He was someone who would put others before him, helping others also participated in the church's youth group however he could.

Many would say he was young at heart. He made many friends along the way due to his charisma, as he enjoyed riding his bike around town and going to the park to play soccer and basketball with anyone that was up to the "challenge", as he would say. He loved making jokes and making everyone laugh; he was also a proud UT longhorns fan, always wearing a hat or shirt representing his team.

Even when his illness weakened him along the way, his faith in God became stronger because he knew who he believed in and where he was going to spend his life eternity with. Some of his favorite phrases were "God is good all the time, and all the time God is good" , "His mercy is greater than life", and "Everything that breathes, praise the Lord". One of the last words he said before passing was, "God is with me".

Gay, Emma Jan (Reber) (1956-2013)

Maiden Name: Reber [Family] Father: Jack Reber, Mother: Earline Douglas

Bellville Times

Emma Jan Gay passed away unexpectedly on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 in Houston.

Upon arriving in Bellville in 1984 with her eldest three children, and soon one on the way, Emma devoted herself to raising her children, aiding in her husband's budding medical clinic and building a circle of friends that would become as close as family.

Over the next few decades, Emma was often seen splitting her time between multiple Bellville ISD campuses to volunteer and attend the never-ending functions, athletic games, occasional principal visits, and awards ceremonies that come with raising four children.

Her energy and creativity seemed endless; between her volunteer activities, Emma devoted time to her other passions of art and gardening.

If you knew Emma well, you knew not to knock on the front door to find her, rather, walk around the house to find her up-to-her-elbows in potting soil amongst the flowers in her garden. It was also a special treat to her dear friends and family to watch the mail in anticipation at Christmastime to see Emma's hand-drawn Christmas card.

Emma's greatest joy was to be surrounded by people having fun. Whether it was a Christmas party, pool party for her kids or a 4th of July, with too many fireworks to count, Emma's playful spirit insured that everyone had a fun time.

Emma was born in Baytown Sept. 18, 1956 to Jack Reber and Earline Douglas Reber.

Emma is survived by her four children- Philippe Gay of Perth, Australia; Suzanne Gay of St. Helena, CA; Christina Gay Fitzgerald of Austin and Paul Gay of Brooklyn, NY, and her former husband, Charles Christophe Gay. She is also survived by her mother and two siblings- Kay Nieri, of Arizona; and Mark Reber, of New Braunfels and is preceded in death by her father, Jack Reber.

Memorial services for Emma were held on Monday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

In lieu of gifts, donations may be made in her name to the Austin County Animal Rescue.

Geick, Glenn Roy (1944-2021)

USFlag[Veteran] Vietnam, RM, US Navy, USS Semmes (DDG-18) [Family] Father: Cleveland Joe Fritz “Cleven” Geick, Mother: Mae Gummelt Graham, Spouse: Joeline Dittlinger , FG

Glenn Roy Geick of Bellville, Texas passed December 1, 2021 at home at the age of 77.

Glenn was born April 6, 1944, in Panama City, Florida, where his dad was stationed at Tyndall Field. He grew up in Brenham and enjoyed hunting and fishing in the woods near his home in Washington County. By the time he graduated from Brenham High School he had earned his pilot's license and amateur radio license. His call sign was wa5osa, or as he would say on the air "whiskey alpha 5 old san antonio". One summer in high school he had a job with his uncle working on clearing the land for Lake Somerville.

After high school, Glenn joined the Navy and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina. Assigned to the USS Semmes (DDG-18), a guided missile destroyer, he served as a radioman in Vietnam. His service travels took him into the Mediterranean as well. After discharge, he attended Texas A&M for electronics engineering. He was always passionate about his Aggie football and followed them regularly.

Glenn began his career with a dictation equipment company in Houston and advanced himself to Branch Manager in Austin, then San Antonio where he was active in the Lion's Club. He met his true love, Joeline, in San Antonio and was married April 19, 1975. After moving to Dallas and Katy, he transferred back to Houston for work that embraced his love of electronics with Motorola and SkyTel. It was a perfect fit for him where talking on his mobile radio during long night trips especially kept him company. He was called to help extensively in Louisiana and Texas during the recovery efforts from Hurricane Rita. He was especially involved with his boys' sports, coaching their Little League baseball teams.

Glenn loved the outdoors and liked taking his family on frequent camping trips. One recent special trip to him was taking Joeline and his granddaughter he raised, Trinity, on a long trip to Washington D.C., circling down the east coast to Florida before heading home. He enjoyed hunting trips to Wyoming, Colorado, south and west Texas, and the ranch in Rocksprings. Glenn scuba dived and also relished other trips taken to Mexico, the Caribbean, Japan, Taiwan, and China. He always enjoyed lake and bay fishing and was thrilled by his Alaskan fishing experience with his brother-in-law. After retiring in the Kenney woods of Bellville, Glenn liked to tinker with his ham radios and corvettes, play golf, and take motorcycle trips with his buddies across Texas.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland Geick and Erna Mae Gummelt Graham. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Joeline Dittlinger Geick; sons, Ryan (Jeanne) of Katy, Jason of Bellville, Alan (Felicia) of Houston; grandchildren, Savannah, Scarlett, Trinity, Aspen, and Emory; brother, Gary Geick; sister, Faye DeSola (Steve) of Spring; nephews Tony and Joel; great-niece Kainoa DeSola; and aunt, Bert Geick who helped raise him, and numerous cousins.

Memorial Mass- 10-00 a.m. preceded by recitation of the Rosary on Monday, December 20, 2021 at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Brenham, Tx.

Glenn's family would like to thank Traditions Home Health and Hospice and all those who have prayed for him and shown an outpouring of love and generosity.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 701 Church St., Brenham, TX 77833.

Glenn, Bethel Hicks (1824-1907)

USFlag Notable person [Veteran] CWCSA, 4CPL, Hunt's Co [Family] Spouse: Margaret [Cemetery] Bethel Hicks Glenn Cemetery

THE BELLVILLE TIMES

Vol. 29 No. 51, December 19, 1907, page 6.

At ten o'clock on Tuesday of this week, Mr. B. H. Glenn, one of Bellville's oldest residents, died at his home in the eastern part of town, aged 83 years, 4 months, and 17 days.

Mr. Glenn has been in failing health for many months and the end was not unlooked for.

Just ten months ago his wife, with whom he lived in this community for over half a century, went before him to the grave. With the passing away of this patriarch another ligature between the distant past and the now is snapped and another pair of hands that helped to make way in the wilderness of a new country are at rest for all time.
