Bader, Kathleen Zela (Woolgar) (1923-2013)

USFlag

Bellville Times

January 29, 1923 - August 26, 2013

Zela Bader died at the age of 90 as the result of a fall that occurred while she was tending the usual business of caring for her home. The subsequent hemorrhaging of her brain could not be stopped and she arrived by Life Flight at Methodist Hospital in Houston unconscious. Zela was surrounded by family from the beginning of this process until the end, eight days later, at Houston Hospice.

Kathleen Zela Woolgar followed her heart from Gosport, England to Bellville, Texas in 1946 to marry Jack Bader, the American soldier who had fallen in love with this beautiful British soldier while they were posted in London during World War II. Although Zela found herself a stranger in a strange and hotter-than-imagined land, she adapted and assimilated, eventually becoming one of Bellville's own.

Zela was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church for over 60 years. She worked the voting polls, volunteered in an elementary school, led a swimming group, and spent many happy times traveling with bank-sponsored bus tours and returning to England with her children and grandchildren. In later years, before her vision declined, she took much pleasure in playing cards with her friends.

Having lost her parents at an early age, Zela's fondest wish was to have a family of her own. Zela was adept at creating something from nothing, and with little resources she created a home and began her family in 1947.

Zela is survived by her two children, Kathy Jackson of Houston and Ian Bader of Bellville, and their respective spouses, Andre and Becky; grandchildren Andrea, Reid, Will, and Catherine and spouses Barry, Melissa, and David; great grandchildren Gwendolyn, Jacob, and baby Jack; nieces Mary Anne Johnston and Sally Nergaard and husband, Kevin McCombs; and grandniece, Natalie Nergaard.

None of her family can imagine a life without her, but we pray for a restoration of sight and a glad reunion with those who preceded her in death, including Zela's parents, Jesse and Albert Woolgar; her sister, Marie Johnston, and husband, Walter; and her handsome soldier and husband, Jack Bader.

In death as in life, Zela did things her way. The essence of who we knew as Mama, Auntie, Nana, and Great Nana B did not arrive at Methodist Hospital, but the body she had so meticulously cared for throughout her life held on until the night before the birth of her newest great-grandson, Jack.

"This is how it ends? Of course not, no. This is how it begins.” -- S. Everett

May God bless and give peace to everyone who has shared this earthly journey with Zela.

Bader, Max (1876-1967)

Max Bader, the president of the Austin County State Bank, was born three miles east of the city of Bellville, December 7, 1876, and the years of his maturity have been identified almost entirely with the interests of this city. He was one of thirteen children, eight sons and five daughters, born to Gotlieb Herman and Henrietta (Vogt) Bader, natives of the Fatherland of Germany. Gotlieb H. Bader was sixteen years when he came to this country, and landing at Galveston, Texas, he came from there to Austin County and identified himself with its educational life. In fact, his entire life was devoted to the work of educating the young, continuing on in the profession until his death. He was married after coming to Galveston, and with his bride he made the trip to Austin County with an ox team.

Max Bader remained on the home farm in Austin County until eleven years of age, attending the district schools and the Bellville grade school, and after leaving the school room he was employed as a clerk for a short time in a drug store. He then entered the employ of Max Stern, a general merchant, and upon his death eight years later, in 1899, Mr. Bader bought the business of his late employer and moved the stock to McGregor. But after a short time, he sold his interests there and returned to Bellville in 1901, and he has since been engaged in general mercantile pursuits here, enjoying a large and remunerative trade. In October of 1909 he assisted in organizing the Austin County State Bank, which is capitalized at twenty-five thousand dollars, with a surplus of five thousand dollars, and Mr. Bader has served as the president of this bank since its organization. He is one of the representative citizens and businessmen of Austin county, and is particularly well known in banking circles.

In 1897 Mr. Bader was united in marriage with Birdie Irving, a daughter of Joseph Irving, deceased, and they have two sons, Leslie and Gillis. Shortly before eight o'clock this morning (Thursday) the shocking discovery was made that L. H. Baron had committed suicide, by hanging himself, in the barn, at his home in Bellville. No reason for the act can be imagined, except a sudden mental derangement. He had attended to his work around the place as usual this morning and the tragedy is as great a mystery to the grief stricken family as to any acquaintance of his The funeral will take place tomorrow, Friday, June 21at, at four o'clock p.m. at Oak Knoll. Rev. Sagebiel, a Lutheran minister of Brenham, and a former pupil of Mr. Baron, will officiate.

Mr. Baron was born in Bastrop on June 18, 1874, and resided there until seventeen years of age, when he began his career as a teacher, in Bastrop. He then attended the Normal Institute of Huntsville and later taught in Colorado and Lavaca counties, then five years in the Lutheran College at Brenham. Later he taught at New Wehdem, and then, after two years at Industry, was elected School Superintendent for Austin County, eight years ago. During his incumbency a great many improvements have been made in our rural schools, evincing the interest that he took in his work. Friends all over the county will be shocked at his untimely death and by them sympathy is felt for the family to whom he was a devoted husband and father.

He is survived by his widow, two young daughters and a little son, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Baron of Bastrop, three sisters, Mrs. J. A. Smothers of Laverna, Texas, Mrs. Paula Polk of Bastrop, and Mrs. Will Meyer of Yoakum.

Baros, George Thomas, II "Tommy" (1953-2013)

Bellville Times

George Thomas "Tommy" Baros, II, 59, of Gonzales, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013. He was born Nov. 30, 1953 in Cuero to George Thomas Baros and Marjorie Crunk Baros. Tommy had graduated from high school and received an associate's degree in college. He had married Martha Carolyn Gibson on July 23, 2011 in Gonzales.

Tommy was cowboy. He loved his dogs, horses and cooking. He adored his family and cherished spending time with them and certainly his love for his horses clearly made them the next thing to family. Tommy was always quick with a smile, a kind word and an encouraging expression. His heart was as big as Texas, the land that he loved. It could be said that Tommy was born 125 years to late, for he was a man with the grit and strength to take a herd of cattle cross country. He loved being outdoors, he reveled in the challenges Mother Nature provided in his work and found a great peace, sitting around a campfire and sharing stories with friends. Tommy felt that "cowboying” was the greatest job on the face of the earth and he enjoyed sharing stories about being a cowboy with its hardships and excitement to his children and grandchildren. Tommy was not an avid talker, he was a man of few words, but when he spoke there was honesty and integrity in his words. He loved music; dancing and singing, his children lovingly say he wasn't great at either, but he enjoyed both just the same as did his wife Carolyn as he held her in his arms. Of all his qualities, his greatest was his expression of love, his wife, children and grandchildren knew he loved them deeply and with out question, they all loved him just as passionately.

Tommy Baros, is survived by his wife, Carolyn Gibson Baros of Gonzales, daughters, Katie Morgan Silber and her husband Kyle of Allen, Rebecca Carolyn Pilcik and her husband Bronson of New Ulm, sons, Josh Loyd Baros and his wife Koi of Victoria, sister, Susan Karpel and husband Mark of Newton, brothers, Bruce Reaves and Patsy of Austin, Bill Reaves and Ann of Gonzales, uncle, Edwin Baros and Aunt Leona Caskey, great aunt, Aline Bryant, mother and father-in-law, Wayne and Betty Gibson, grandchildren, Bryant and Bethany Pilcik, Isaiah and Marley Silber and Makrae Baros and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Robinson officiating. Interment will follow in the Westhoff Cemetery. Pallbearers: Charles Peterson, Malcolm Talley, Carl Weber, Hayne Hermes, Dave Kealing and Darby Beyer, honorary pallbearers: Leslie Ploeger, Charles Zella and Mel Hilbrich. From there, he followed the jobs to Houston, landing at Shell Oil, where he designed seismic equipment for oil exploration for the next 30 years. Making sure that equipment worked in the field sent him across the Americas, Europe, and Africa.

Houston is also where he met Julia Marie Hueske, who grew up in Philadelphia, but whose father, Ernest Hueske, was from Brenham. Gene and Julia married on November 23, 1963, the day after JFK was assassinated.

Gene and Julia were devoted to their five children (Barry, Robert, Susan, James, and Linda) and were deeply involved in the community of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and School and multitudes of child- and community-related activities.

As their children left home one by one, Gene and Julia pursued their careers until 2000, when they retired and moved to Austin to be closer to the first of what would become ten grandchildren.

In retirement, they were active grandparents, traveled the world together, and became integral members of LAMP at UT-Austin, where members cherished the 1,000s of photos Gene took documenting activities.

Gene was a lifelong organic gardener and advocate for fine craftsmanship and scratch-made whole foods. He reveled in teaching anyone who was interested how things work and shared freely of the things he made, including his famous Czech Lager from his homemade kegerator.

After suffering a heart attack in 2022, he concentrated on his family even more. He was delighted when family gathered from far and wide to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary and his 91st Christmas, even cooking the beef tenderloin at the center of the meal.

In his final moments, Gene placed his family first, summoning the strength to share individual moments with many of those who loved him. He even managed to give Julia one last kiss before saying goodbye.

The family is grateful to Ascension Seton Hospital and Compassus Hospice for the loving care they provided during Gene's final days.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cockrell School of Engineering Area of Greatest Need Fund at UT-Austin.

Obituary Joseph A. Bell

Died at the Confederate home in Austin, Texas, April 27th 1922, Joseph A. Bell.

Mr. Bell was born August 13th, 1841, in Kentucky or Tennessee, and moved to Texas with his parents when a small boy. The family settled in Fayette County, where he grew to manhood. When the Civil war broke out young Bell, then twenty years old, joined the Confederate ranks under Colonel, later General Tom Green, in what was known as the Arizona Expedition, returned with the command, and served on with it, returning home at the close of the war.

In February, 1868, he married Mrs. Mary Robinson, whose maiden name was Spence.

Mr. and Mrs. Bell had no children of their own, but their home was an asylum for motherless or fatherless children as long as they were able to care for them. They raised one orphan, a girl, they called their own. She became the mother of the Sutton family, Joe, and Hulen and their sisters.

Mr. Bell was a devoted Christian all his mature life, a great and good singer and Christian worker. It was a great privilege to hear him talk on the Bible, which he almost knew by heart.

On Sunday evening, April 23 while at the supper table he said to his wife, "Mary, there is something the matter with my jaw." He never spoke again and died the following Thursday.

The body was carried to the chapel of the Home, and then the Methodist minister of Austin, with his choir, came and held the burial services, and the body was laid in its final resting place.

This aged couple entered the Confederate Home last June.

The writer saw them last March, they were happy, saying they were well cared for and had plenty of everything they needed.

He sleeps the sleep no earthly bugler can awake, but, God at His own appointed time will send His angel to sound the bugle call, and methinks, Joseph A. Bell will be one of the first to say,

"Here am I"

Bell, Thomas Henry (1796-1858)

USFlag

The town Bellville named after him., Birth uncertain, 1796-1802. Mr. Bell traveled from Florida to Texas and settled in Austin County around 1822, although in a Headright Certificate issued by the Austin County Board of Land Commissioners, it is stated that he came to Texas in January, 1834. In 1836 Thomas joined the Texas Army and fought in the Battle of San Jacinto under the command of Captain Moseley Baker. Mr. Bell was married to Abagail Grimes, and they never had any natural born children, although they did adopt a young man that was named John G. Bell. Thomas died in 1857, at his home near Bellville, and was buried in the Medford graveyard. Years later as Bellville grew, they opened a new Cemetery called Oak Knoll, and Medford soon became rundown and overgrown. It then became the local cemetery for African Americans. It is now known as the Jeff, or Jefferson Cemetery. Thomas Bell's grave site is unmarked, and that is a real shame.

Berckenhoff, George Liberat (1935-2022)

USFlag

George L. Berckenhoff of Sealy passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the age of 87. George was born on May 30, 1935 in Moulton, Texas to Liberat "Lee" and Lillie Berckenhoff (nee Svetlik). He attended St. Joseph's Catholic and Baursville Public Schools before entering the US Army in 1957. While serving in the Army, he was stationed in Poitiers, France where he managed supplies, trucking, and warehouse inventory logistics. Upon honorable discharge from military service, George moved to Houston and began working at JMH Grocery in Bellaire. Shortly thereafter, in October 1959, he went to work for Houston Coca-Cola & Bottling Company as a route delivery driver. It was during this time that he met his wife of more than 58 years, Lorene Berckenhoff (nee Mazac), at The Bill Mraz Ballroom in Houston. George and Lorene were married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sealy on August 22, 1964.

George's career with Coca-Cola spanned 33-1/2 years until his retirement on April 30, 1993. He retired from Coca-Cola as the Brittmoore Area Cold Drink Supervisor. His loyalty for the Coca-Cola brand ran strong and deep, and he refused to ever drink a Pepsi or Dr. Pepper product. After his retirement from Coca-Cola, he found a second career ranching for the Frank Koy Family Ranch in Sealy where for more than 25 years, he tended to their cattle, shredded and fertilized the pastures, and any other necessary tractor work. This second career was more of a hobby as he truly enjoyed spending time with "Mr. Frank" and Terry Koy discussing the buying/selling of cattle, the hay fields, and the constant need "for more rain."

In 1985, George joined the San Felipe-Frydek Volunteer Fire Department where he served as treasurer for 35 years until his retirement in 2020. He looked forward to attending the monthly meetings and keeping the department's books and records. George was also an active member of the Sealy American Legion Post 442 and Sealy Knights of Columbus Council 3313. He and Lorene were members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where they attended mass weekly; however, most fellow parishioners will best remember them for their volunteer efforts each fall when they would cook the BBQ sauce for the annual Church Bazaar.

George's love for dominos and taking care of his cattle and pastures occupied much of his time. However, he always found time to listen to "Polka Time" from 8 till 10 each morning on El Campo's KULP radio station, the highlight of which was listening to the "trading post" and "cattle markets report" segments. His afternoons were often filled by watching re-runs of Mollie B and/or the Big Joe Polka Shows on RFD-TV. Evenings had the television tuned to news and then "the ball game," which usually meant the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros.

George is preceded in death by his father and mother, Liberat "Lee" and Lillie Berckenhoff, and younger brother, Leroy Berckenhoff.

He is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Lorene Berckenhoff (nee Mazac); their two sons and their wives, Stephen and Tina Berckenhoff of Katy and Mike and Tami Berckenhoff of Spring; five grandchildren, Holly Berckenhoff of Virginia Beach, Virginia, James Berckenhoff (wife, Caylee) of Katy, Brian Berckenhoff (wife, Kelsey) of Katy, Wyatt Berckenhoff of Nacogdoches, and Colton Berckenhoff of College Station; and one great-grandson, Caden Berckenhoff of Katy. George's surviving siblings are brother, Robert (wife, Annie Mae) Berckenhoff of Moulton; sister, Edith Rerich of Weimar; sister, Vickie (husband, Jim) Netardus of Shiner; and brother, Pete (wife, Jerilene) of Sealy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable contributions to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Sealy, The San Felipe-Frydek Volunteer Fire Department, or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the entire Immaculate Conception Church's parish family, the Knights of Columbus, and KJZT fraternal organizations for their prayers and mass intentions. An additional expression of gratitude for Dr. Sherman (MD Anderson), Dr. Mammen (Memorial Herman), Dr. DeLeon, as well as hospice and Ms. Glenda for their compassionate care. Lastly, George's family thanks all of you for your love, support, thoughts, and continued prayers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Knesek Brothers Funeral Home with visitation at 5 pm, followed by rosary at 7 pm Thursday, November 10, followed by funeral mass at 1 pm Friday, November 11 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sealy, Texas. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.

Bellville Times

A Life Remembered

Pauline Stella Bienek was born Dec. 3, 1919 to Wallace and Josephine (Krocolck) Kaliszewski in Bellville. She was educated and married in Bellville and lived there, and in the Cochran and Raccoon Bend Community, her entire life.

She married Mike Bienek on Oct. 26, 1937 and attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where her parents helped to establish the church in its beginnings.

Pauline was a fabulous cook, and accomplished seamstress, an avid reader and most of all a loving wife, mother and caregiver. Her compassion for others was an example to all who knew her.

Even when she could no longer attend church services, she received communion at home after Saturday's Mass and remained intensely interested in what was happening in the church community and at "Young at Heart" a church recreational group she attended regularly.

Pauline and her family are so thankful to have had Carla "Plunnie" McDade as her caretaker, friend and "Valentine". Carla was essential in Paulines' care and comfort. She was also thankful to have Texas Home Health Care and Brazos Valley Hospice visit her almost every day as her health declined.

Pauline is survived by two sons Douglas Bienek of Bellville and Michael and Carrie Bienek of Bellville and one daughter Marcella Schomburg and husband Wayne of Sealy. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Aaron Schomburg of Bellville, Neil Schomburg and his wife Amy of Pearland, Leigh Ann Schomburg Ryan and husband Bob of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Jerid Bienek of Bellville.
