Neely, Jubal Allen, M.D. (1888-1975)

USFlag Notable person [Veteran] WW1, Dr., US Army, Medical Corps [Family] Father: Jubal L Neely, Mother: Mary Ella Head, Spouse: Almeida Fordtran [Cemetery] Oak Knoll Cemetery () , FG

In 1915, Dr. Jubal Allen Neely, graduate of the Galveston Medical School, moved to Bellville and opened a private Medical practice. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp during World War I and returned to Bellville with an injury. When the injury required bed rest in 1926, Dr. Herbert Edward Roensch, a Bellville practicing medicine in nearby Kenney, moved to Bellville to help tend to Neely's patients. They formed a partnership, and in 1928, the two doctors opened Bellville's first hospital with four beds. That same year, the discovery of an oil field in the area led to an increase in population, and soon plans were underway for a larger hospital.

Bellville Times

Robert “Dr. Bob” Allen Neely, M.D.

On the night of Monday, November 24, 2014, heaven gained an angel when Dr. Bob peacefully left this world. At the time of his passing, he was at his home in Bellville, Texas surrounded by the love and comfort of his beloved wife, Joy. He was 93 years old.

Dr. Bob truly was a gentleman of the finest order. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who placed the utmost importance on family. He was a gifted, dedicated physician who served the Bellville community for just shy of 50 years. He was a decorated veteran who loved his country with every inch of his being. He had an enviable, solid, and unshakeable Christian faith, and was a spirited member and supporter of his church, St. John Lutheran Church of Bellville. He was passionate about and unfaltering in his commitment to philanthropy. He had a fabulous sense of humor, and a knack for brightening the days of those fortunate enough to cross his path. He loved travelling, fishing, golfing, reading, photography, and the Texas Longhorns. Dr. Bob was a loving, compassionate, gentle, intelligent, talented, and supremely interesting man who will be dearly missed.

Dr. Bob was born on March 1, 1921 in Temple, Texas to Dr. Jubal Allen Neely and Mrs. Almeida Brookfield Fordtran Neely. He grew up in Bellville with his parents and younger brother, Dr. Winston Brookfield Neely. Almeida taught her sons to respect and appreciate their German ancestry and heritage, which stemmed from her grandfather, Charles Fordtran. Dr. Bob enjoyed sharing the story of his great-grandfather's pivotal role in establishing the State of Texas.

Charles, a German of Huguenot descent, immigrated to America in 1830. In January of 1831, Charles joined Friedrich Ernst to move to Texas as part of the Stephen F. Austin Colony. Charles and Friedrich began the first permanent German settlement in Texas, which subsequently developed into the town of Industry. Upon arriving in Texas, Charles was tasked with surveying land on behalf of the Stephen F. Austin Colony. As compensation for his work, Charles was given a league of land in what is now Austin County, which remained in Dr. Bob's family for over 130 years. There is a Texas Historical Marker located on Highway 159, about one mile west of Industry, that is dedicated to Charles and his contributions to Texas history.

Dr. Bob graduated from Bellville High School in 1938, and shortly thereafter began his life-long affiliation and love affair with the University of Texas. Dr. Bob graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1942, with a degree of Bachelors of Science, and from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1944, with a degree of Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Bob completed his post-graduate training in Ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and later interned and completed his Ophthalmology residency at Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. In 1957, the American Board of Ophthalmology certified Dr. Bob as a specialist in Ophthalmology.

While attending medical school in Galveston, Dr. Bob met the first love of his life, Miss Eleanor Virginia Stein. On June 29, 1944, Dr. Bob married Eleanor in Galveston at the Trinity Episcopal Church. On October 19, 1945, Dr. Bob and Eleanor welcomed twin sons, Dr. Byron Davis Neely and Dr. Warren Fordtran Neely, into this world. They also had a daughter, Patricia Ann, but the Lord called Patricia to heaven shortly after her birth. Dr. Bob and Eleanor were married for almost 46 years when she passed away on January 9, 1990.

Four days before marrying Eleanor, Dr. Bob was commissioned in the United States Navy Medical Corps. During World War II, Dr. Bob served in the Navy's Amphibious Forces, for which he was awarded the American Campaign Medal. He also served during the Korean Conflict as a Senior Medical Corps Officer, for which he received the National Defense Service Medal. Dr. Bob was a proud veteran and Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Dr. Bob practiced medicine for 49 years, and aside from his time spent practicing medicine in the Navy, Dr. Bob maintained his medical practice in Bellville for the entirety of his medical career. Prior to specializing in Ophthalmology, Dr. Bob practiced family medicine in Bellville for several years. Thereafter, Dr. Bob became Bellville's one and only Ophthalmologist, until a new crop of Ophthalmologists opened up shop in Bellville toward the end of Dr. Bob's career. In fact, if you are a Bellville resident over the age of 30, it is likely that you were once one of Dr. Bob's patients. Dr. Bob was impassioned with his work, and steadfast in his commitment to serving the vision needs of the Bellville community. He retired from the active practice of medicine on December 31, 1992 at the age of 71.

Dr. Bob was an active member of both the local and national medical communities. He was a former trustee and staff member of the Bellville General Hospital, and the former President of Mid-Tex Nursing Homes. He was a member and former President of both the Austin-Grimes-Waller Counties Medical Society and the Ninth District Medical Society. He was also a member of the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, and the Texas Ophthalmology Association. Dr. Bob was particularly engaged with the Texas Medical Association. He served in the Texas Medical Association's House of Delegates, and as a member of the Board of Directors of its Political Action Committee. In addition, Dr. Bob was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Society of Vienna.

On August 24, 1990, Dr. Bob married the second love of his life, Mrs. Joy Snodgrass Brown, in College Station, Texas. Joy shared Dr. Bob's love of travelling, and a majority of their golden years were spent travelling the world. Dr. Bob was an adventurous globetrotter, having travelled to all seven continents. His favorite trip with Joy was to the Galápagos Islands.

One of the most notable aspects of Dr. Bob's character was his selfless dedication to his church and community, and to a multitude of civic, patriotic, and charitable organizations. Dr. Bob was a dedicated congregant of St. John's for 50 years. He was a member and the former President of St. John's Church Council, and a member of St. John's Stewardship, Twelve Keys, and Trust Committees. He also served as St. John's Seminary Appeals Coordinator, and a member of its Lay Assistants.

Dr. Bob was an avid participant in and advocate for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and he served on the Advisory Board of the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Bob's commitment to service and to the Boy Scouts was so great that he received the Silver Beaver Award, the Boy Scouts of America's council-level distinguished service award. In addition, Dr. Bob was diligently immersed with the German-Texan Heritage Society, serving as a member of its Advisory Board and a former member of its Board of Directors. He was equally committed to his support of and involvement with his local community. Dr. Bob was a member and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Bellville, a founding member and former President of the Bellville Area United Fund, and a member and former President of the Bellville Lions Club.

Dr. Bob was a huge proponent and champion of education who bestowed his time and resources to improving and developing access to education. He was a member and former President of the Board of Directors of the Bellville Independent School District. Dr. Bob was also a dynamically involved University of Texas alumnus. He was a Life Member of the Univer

Newman, Michael Henry (1955-2024)

Notable person [Family] Father: Henry O Newman, Mother: Rosiele ‘Rose’ Wiktorik  ()

Michael Henry Newman

This is the story of Michael ‘Mike' Henry Newman, a wonderful man that was loved and will be missed, cherished and fondly remembered for his castle and bakery. Michael's story starts on July 23, 1955, the oldest child of Henry and Rosiele ‘Rose' Wiktorik Newman. Mike was born in Bellville and died March 13, 2024, at the castle he built in Bellville.

He would spend the majority of his life in Bellville. As a child, he was a member of the First Baptist Church, a Boy Scout member and he did things that a typical kid did growing up in the 60's. He was an honor graduate of the 1973 Bellville High School Class. Shortly after graduation, he traveled abroad living in several places including Spain and Italy. At this time, he met his future wife, Gabrielle McGrath. In 1978, they were married in Gibraltar and then moved back to Bellville where their son was born.

In his earlier years, he was a stocker at Lockwood's Grocery Store and later an electrician and manager at the Bellville Potato Chip Factory. His heart yearned to do more, so in 1983 he opened Newman's Bakery in a small location and as his business grew, he purchased the former Harry's Superette building where his business continues.

His next dream was to build a castle (moat, drawbridge, chapel and all). With his creativity, he designed and built the majority of the castle himself, even learning how to weld. Building the castle was an ongoing project which lasted approximately ten years. When things were finally in order, Mike moved into the castle in 2007. The bakery was still in operation and he decided to give tours of the castle. As the word spread, busloads of tourists would visit the bakery and castle daily. He felt another challenge and during this time he became a beekeeper and had hives at numerous locations, bottling thousands of jars of honey.

Mike was a giving person where many of his deeds were done under the radar. He was a member of the Gideon's organization. Part of his ministry were weekly visits to the county jail where he was able to interact with the inmates.

Mike also had a passion for sailing and spent many hours sailing his boat. His sailing plans and dreams continued as he was hired to help sail a boat from France to Annapolis. He also charter sailed around the Cape Horn of Africa and, his most recent trip last year, he was on a boat that sailed from Tahiti to Hawaii. He considered all of these sailing journeys a treat.

Loved ones that cleared the path for Mike are his father Henry O. Newman, grandparents Henry Oswell and Jennie Fisher Newman, and Joseph and Clara Pfeffer Wiktorik.

Loved ones that will miss him are his mother Rosiele Newman, a son, sister and brother-in-law Sherry and Brent Welty, nieces and nephews, Angela and Gunnar Kent, Ashley Welty and Chad and Amanda Welty.

Nichols, William Snowden "Nick" (1951-2024)

Nickname: Nick [Family] Father: W. S. Nichols Jr, Mother: Natalie, Spouse: Becky, Children: Will; Jeremy  ()

On Monday, January 29, 2024, William S. Nichols, III, fondly known as Nick, loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home following a yearlong, valiant battle with brain cancer. He beat the odds every step of the way and never gave up.

Nick was born in 1951 during his father's final year of veterinary school. His father, W. S. Nichols, Jr., called Bill or Doc, soon opened the Nichols Veterinary Clinic and moved his young family to Woodville, Texas — the small town that shaped Nick. The honesty, hard work, and fellowship he learned in Woodville would define his legacy.

Nick had a wonderful childhood in Woodville being raised by Doc and Natalie Nichols. Nick often credited his happiness and success in life to the values his parents instilled in him from an early age. He always loved music and started learning how to play the piano in the first grade — a talent he would refine over decades. In high school, he was the organist for a rock band, Brevity. However, his dreams of stardom were brief. Nick buckled down and graduated Valedictorian from Kirby High School. He continued the family tradition by attending Texas A&M University and was a diehard Aggie for life.

Nick was a proud member of the Texas A&M Corp of Cadets in Outfit A-1. His A-1 buddies became his best friends and remained so, getting together frequently to retell stories from the good old days.

College Station gave Nick more than lifelong friends. It was there he fell in love with Becky — the love of his life. They were a perfect match, and Becky was by Nick's side until the very end.

After graduation, he started his career with the accounting firm Arthur Young and remained there for nearly a decade. In 1976, he and Becky married and started their life together in Houston. In 1984, he and Bill Paulea opened Suncor Development, a real estate development company, and were soon joined by Stuart Goldman. They made a remarkable team and remained the best of friends.

Following the death of his father in 1998, Nick established the Nichols Foundation in Doc's memory to provide college scholarships for children in Woodville and Tyler County. He further supported education through his service to Texas A&M and the Mays Business School. Nick always remembered his roots and prioritized giving back.

In 2008, he helped form Allegiance Bank of Texas, now Stellar Bank, and was honored to be named to its Board of Directors. Nick felt a deep sense of pride being involved with Stellar Bank, giving his heart and soul to his work on the Board alongside many of his dearest friends and colleagues. Nick had a keen business sense, but that is not what made him successful.

Nick loved people. It didn't matter who you were. Nick would treat you with respect and warmth, and you would surely walk away happy to have met him. He radiated a positivity that was infectious, and his success in business was a fortunate byproduct of that innate goodness.

Nick and Becky have two sons, Will and Jeremy. They were the love and pride of his life. He coached them in little league sports and taught them how to be good people. Nick was the best dad who led by example. He was proud of the men his children have become. While he loved being a father, Nick found a new zest for life through his grandchildren, who affectionately called him G and will remember him for his unconditional love. They were everything to him.

Growing up in East Texas, Nick loved the outdoors. As an adult, he spent most of his free time with loved ones at his ranch in Texas and his home in Colorado, making many dear friends along the way. In recent years, Nick and Becky moved permanently to the ranch and have enjoyed being members of the Bellville community.

Throughout his life, Nick was an active member of his church, a devout husband, an exemplary father, the best grandpa, the closest friend to many — and at least a small inspiration to anyone who spent more than five minutes with him. He will be remembered for his wisdom, wit, patience, storytelling, and deep love of family and friends.

Nick leaves behind his mother, Natalie Nichols; his wife, Becky Nichols; his sons, Will Nichols and Jeremy Nichols; his daughter-in-law, Kristen Nichols; his beloved grandchildren, Patrick Miller, Henry Nichols, Caroline Nichols, Sophie Nichols, and Liam Nichols; his siblings, Michael Nichols, Nancy Sales, and Pat Nichols; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Debi Nichols, Mark Sales, and Jennifer Nichols; nieces and nephews, Bill Nichols, Betsy Hemphill, Alex Sales, Marshall Sales, Harry Sales, Luke Nichols, and Blake Nichols; and all of their spouses, significant others, and loved ones. Nick will be missed by all who knew him.

The funeral will be Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 10-30 a.m. at Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville, followed by a celebration luncheon at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Bellville and a private internment.

Nonnenmacher, Johnnie B. (1893-1942)

[Family] Father: John Nonnenmacher, Spouse: Winnie Surmann [Cemetery] Shelby Cemetery () [COD] Bullet wound

New Ulm Enterprize

JUNE 11, 1942 p. 1 (The Bellville Historical Society has scrapbooks with clipped obituaries from The Ulm Newspaper starting from 1974 to 2003. The page number after the name is the page number from the 1974 to 1980 scrapbook.)

J. B. NONNENMACHER, PROMINENT ROCKHOUSE CITIZEN, DIES FROM BULLET WOUND TUESDAY NIGHT

Small Caliber Pistol which he was cleaning was accidently discharged

SERVICES HELD TODAY

Johnnie B. Nonnenmacher, 48 year old prominent farmer of the Rockhouse community, died in the Bellville hospital Tuesday evening at 8-45 o'clock from a gun shot wound in his head, suffered at about 3-00 o'clock in the afternoon.

According to informants Mr. Nonnenmacher was cleaning a small caliber pistol in his work shop at his home when the accident occurred. He was found by his wife who went to look for him when he failed to answer her call. Mrs. Nonnenmacher, finding him unconscious in a sitting position on his work bench, did not at the time suspect her husband was wounded, thinking that he had been overcome from the excessive heat that prevailed during the afternoon. She immediately went to the phone to call a neighbor to help remove her husband to the home. It was after the arrival of neighbors that it was found he had been shot. The wounded man was taken to the Bellville hospital in the Zaskoda funeral home ambulance, however, all surgical skill to save a life was in vain.

The pistol Mr. Nonnenmacher was cleaning was found under the work bench. Still holding in his hand was a smalll oil rag used in cleaning the gun, and on the bench near him was an oil can and another rag with a small wire attached to it which was used in cleaning the barrel. It is believed that the gun was accidently discharged while he was in the act of cleaning it.

Mr. Nonnenmacher was a life time resident of Austin county. He was born in New Ulm on September 23, 1893, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Nonnenmacher. He attended the local schools for his education

In December, 1915, he was united in marriage with Miss Winnie Surmann. The couple moving to the Rockhouse community where they operated a small farm. In connection with farming he also operated a small garage and repair shop for a number of years. During the past six years he was also employed by Commissioners Precinct No. 4, as a road maintainer operator. On Thursday, June 4, he made public his intentions by announcing his candidacy for the position of Commissioner of Precinct No, 4. In general Mr. Nonnenmacher took a great interest in the welfare of his community and county, possessing a friendly nature which won him many friends and a large acquaintanceship.

Funeral services were held from the family residence at 3-30 o'clock this Thursday afternoon with Rev. G. C. Brannies of the Industry Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Shelby cemetery. Zaskoda Funeral Home of Industry had charge of arrangements.

The many beautiful floral tributes and the large attendance at the services gave evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and relatives.

Besides his grief stricken wife he is survived by four daughters and two sons, namely Mrs. Clifton (Vivian) Kuehn of Bryan, Leslie Nonnenmacher of San Antonio, Mrs. Victor (Leola) Cappadona and Miss Doris Nonnenmacher of Galveston and Clarice and Weldon Nonnenmacher at home; two granddaughters, Agnes Faye Cappaddona of Galveston and Mary Lynn Nonnenmacher of San Antonio. Also surviving are three brothers and four sisters, Otto Nonnenmacher of W der, Edwin and Chas.
