Zapalac, Louis Joseph, Jr. (1930-2024)

USFlag[Veteran] Korea, SGT, USMC, 1948-52, 1948-1949 KW 1950-52 [Family] Father: Louis John Zapalac, Mother: Julia Vykoukal, Spouse: Carolyn Krampitz

Louis Zapalac died peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 94, in Sealy, Texas. He was born on March 7, 1930, the son of longtime Sealy residents Louis and Julia Zapalac.

As a young child, Louis spoke Czech at home. He began learning English when he started Catholic school at five. Remarkably, he entered Sealy High School at the age of twelve. Louis excelled in academics, football, basketball, and tennis. When not in school, he worked long hours at his grandfather’s cotton gin and went duck hunting whenever possible. Upon graduation in 1946, he attended Tarleton State Junior College in Stephenville, Texas, where he initially studied petroleum engineering and played collegiate football.

In 1948, Louis enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served four years on active duty, primarily at Camp Pendleton in Southern California, first as a radio operator, then as a draftsman, and finally as the ammunition depot manager. He separated from the service in 1952 with the rank of Sergeant.

After returning to Sealy in 1952, Louis worked with his father in the family five-and-dime business. He eventually took over the store and ran it successfully until his retirement. Louis continued his love of hunting throughout his working years, sharing many fun stories of going to deer camp with friends and family. Upon retirement, Louis became a skilled woodworking craftsman. Most notably, he built birdhouses and replicas of prominent landmarks, such as the dance halls in the area.

Louis was a lifelong member of Sealy’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. As a follower of Jesus, he loved his neighbor and was known for his exceptional kindness.

In one of his journals, Louis shares the story of running a tennis league in 1952 at the Sealy public courts. There, a young lady caught his eye—Carolyn Krampitz. He eventually gained the courage to ask her out on a date. After a few years of courtship, they were married on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955. They shared a wonderful marriage of sixty-five years until Carolyn’s passing in 2020. They were the proud parents of three children: Brian, Steve, and Beverly (all graduates of the University of Texas).

Louis is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Carolyn. Sadly, their son Brian passed away in 2006 from cancer at the age of 49.

He is survived by his brothers, James and Leroy Zapalac; his son, Steve Zapalac, and his wife, Kim; his daughter, Beverly Bell, and her husband, Kirk; and Brian’s wife, Jamie Zapalac. Grandchildren: Stacy Okonski and her husband, Daryl; Leslie Anderson and her husband, Brent; Keith Zapalac and his wife, Dana; Jordan Zapalac; Brady Zapalac and his wife, Sarah; Jeff Bell; Carrie Bell; and Emily Bell. Great-grandchildren: Brandt, Ally, and Tyler (Stacy’s family); Andie, Ford, and Shep (Leslie’s family); Brian, Beau, and Austyn (Keith’s family); and Hudson (Jeff’s son).

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Louis and Carolyn’s caregivers for their exceptional care and support over the past six years.

Papa was a remarkable man whose love for his family knew no bounds. He was a role model, embodying wisdom, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those he cherished. His stories taught valuable lessons about life and the importance of friendship and family. Papa’s sense of humor was a bright light in our lives. His legacy will live on in our hearts, reminding us to honor and cherish one another as he did through his extraordinary life.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 600 Fourth St., Sealy, TX. The Mass will begin at noon, and interment will follow at the Catholic church cemetery, 811 Main St., Sealy, TX.

Zapalac, Willie Frank (1920-2010)

USFlag Notable person [Veteran] WW2, 1LT, USAAF [Family] Father: Vladimir Rudolph Zapalac, Mother: Louise Sodolak, Spouse: Dorothy Lampe

Willie Frank Zapalac
Dec. 11, 1920 - May 18, 2010

Willie Zapalac, born to V.R. Zapalac and Mary Louise Sodolak in Sealy, Texas, died Tuesday morning, May 18. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Clara Zapalac Sledge. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lampe Zapalac; sister Lilly Zapalac Patton of Waco, TX; and brother, Frank Willie Zapalac of Bellville, TX.

The family he left behind and loved includes his children, Jill Zapalac, Bill Zapalac and wife Michelle, Jeff Zapalac and wife Shannon, all of Austin; grandchildren, Dr. Jake Zapalac and wife Lisa of Austin, Brittanie Zapalac Horn and husband, Dr. Louis Horn of Savannah, Georgia, Will and wife Stacey Zapalac of Houston, Shad and wife Angela Zapalac of Austin; and the 10 great-grandchildren that brought him so much joy.

Willie grew up on a dairy farm in Bellville, TX, rising each morning at 5-00 a.m. to take care of chores before school. His mother did let him sleep in until 6-00 on days of a football game.

Willie was a five sports letterman at Bellville High School, lettering all four years in football. His football honors included all-state selection, junior and senior years, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Best Punter in the state his senior year. He played in the High School All Star Game and the Oil Bowl. In 1988, he was enshrined into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame as the best player in the state for the decade of the 1930s.

Willie's 1938 Bellville team was the best in the state and best in Bellville history. The record-setting defense and running of "Wild" Willie Zapalac led Bellville to an 11-0 record. Ten of the wins were shutouts, the defense allowing only 13 points and 1127 yards for the entire season, all of which are still Bellville records. Offensively, they averaged over 40 points and 317 yards rushing per game, also Bellville records. Willie rushed for 2189 yards on 238 carries, averaging 9.2 yds per carry. Against Caldwell he rushed for 323 yds, which still stands as Bellville's only 300 yd rushing performance. He also scored 245 points or 22 points per game. Although there was not a state wide championship in those years, Bellville was the best team in the state, winning their final game, the Regional Championship 47-0.

After being heavily recruited, Willie enrolled at Texas A&M in the fall of 1939, playing on two Cotton Bowl teams. He was elected best blocker for three years and captain of his senior team. He was as proud of also being elected as student representative to the Athletics Council that year. While at A&M, Willie had another unique football accomplishment by playing in two College All Star and East-West Shrine games. He was elected into the A&M Football Hall of Fame in 1991.

During World War II, he served in the Air Force, completing 32 bombing missions as a navigator in the Seventh Air Force in the Pacific. He was appointed Squadron Bombardier for the 494 Bomb Squadron, retiring from service as the rank of Captain.

In 1947, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Injuries limited his playing career and that is when he entered the coaching profession.

After stops at McAllen High School, Hillsboro High School, Tarlton Jr. College, and Arlington State Jr. College, he began his 23 years of college coaching at Texas A&M. Four of those years were with Bear Bryant and his SWC championship team that resulted from the hard work of the Junction Boys. After two years at Texas Tech and one year at Oklahoma State, Willie joined Darrel Royal's staff at the University of Texas in 1964. During his 12 years in Austin, the Horns played in 11 bowl games, won 7 SWC championships, and 2 National Championships. Riding the success of the wishbone offense, Willie coached the offensive line that set NCAA rushing records, produced several All-Americans, and had a 30 game win streak, 1968 to 1970, which still stands as UT's longest win streak.

At age 55, Willie started a new career- defensive line coach in the NFL. He worked for Don Coryelle of the St. Louis Cardinals, Chuck Knox of the Buffalo Bills, and finished his 10 year NFL career with Bum Phillips and the New Orleans Saints.

Willie retired to Austin to enjoy life with Dorothy, his wife of 63 years. He was extremely proud of his family and gave most credit to Dorothy. He loved his kids, daughters-in-law, grandkids, and especially his 10 great-grandchildren over the last 14 years. He looked forward to gatherings of the people he loved.

Three weeks before he passed, during a visit by some of his former players, he waved his hand around the room and said, "We need to get all these people together".

The Zapalac Family wishes to extend its gratitude to the nurses and care-givers, especially Sally, at Heartland Healthcare Center. We also wish to thank Dr. Robert Cain. These people showed a continuous and genuine caring for our father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

A memorial service will be held at 2-00 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 4600 E. Ben White, with Monsignor Fred Bomar officiating. Interment will be held at Austin Memorial Park.

Zarzour, Joseph Michael "Joe" (1970-2024)

Nickname: Joe [Family] Father: Andre Zarzour, Mother: Phyllis

Joseph (Joe) Michael Zarzour of Spring, Texas passed away unexpectantly on July 30th, 2024, at the age of 54. Joe was born in Lansing, Michigan to Dr. Andre and Phyllis Zarzour of Spring, Texas.

Joey spent his very early years in Jackson, Michigan and moved to North Houston when he was in Elementary School. He graduated from Westfield High School and The University of Houston with a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s Degree in Finance.

Joey had a strong understanding of business. He opened his own Home Appraisal Business, which thrived for many years and had loyal customers and was well thought of in the appraisal community.

In July of 1998, Joey’s Daughter, Haley was born and Joey was very excited to see Haley, as she grew up. Haley is an amazing young lady and Joey came to realized this, which we are grateful for.

Joey was known for a lot of fun craziness. His love for cars and need for speed, in his teenage years, was evident and his parents thought it was a good idea to get him a Mustang, actually two Mustangs. This continued in his adult life and would own several Corvettes.

Joey also loved Galveston and the beach. In his teenage years, Joey and his brother Jimmy worked on the beach for many summers renting umbrellas and chairs. Joe’s passion for Houston sports was strong and he loved cheering and cussing out the Astros, Rockets, Texans/Oilers and maybe placing a bet or two on them, throughout the years. Although Joey could be a pain in butt (since birth) he truly loved his family, his cousins and especially Haley, as well as his Mom and Dad. His family loved him, dearly. Also, Joe had many friends and this was evident in recent days.

Joe did not always make the best personal decisions in many aspects of his life, the support of his family and friends was unwavering.

Joey will be remembered for his stupid jokes, quoting lines in movies, making snap decisions, his love of travel, frequenting bars or casinos and hanging out on the beach in Galveston.

Joey is preceded in death by his Grandparents, Everett Hogan and Irene Hogan, Grandparents, Youssef and Vera Zarzour, Uncles Dr. Steven Zarzour, Dr. Alfred Zarzour, George Ezzat and his Aunt Georgette Abadir.

He is survived by his parents Dr. Andre and Phyllis Zarzour, Daughter, Haley Zarzour and special friend Matthew Faye, his Brother Jim and wife Amanda Zarzour, nieces Meagan Zarzour Tielke and husband Justin Tielke, Lauren Zarzour and Emily Zarzour. Also, numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

I love you, Bro…I will make sure Haley is taken care of.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for Joe’s daughter has been set up.
