Bretschneider, Charles William (1934-2020)

The Sealy News, February 19, 2020:

Charles William Bretschneider passed away on February 10, 2020 at his home in Sealy, TX at the age of 85. Charles was born on May 1, 1934 in Cat Spring, TX to Walter and Leona Bretschneider. He graduated from Bellville High School and Blinn Jr. College. While in college, Charles worked on the construction of FM 1094 from Cat Spring to New Ulm.

On August 28, 1955, Charles married Doris Louise Bishop, his high school sweetheart. It was a match made in heaven! They lived 65 wonderful years together and were blessed with 3 children.

After graduation from Blinn, they moved to Houston, TX where Charles began working for Wyatt Industries manufacturing pressure vessels for refineries. He was an Estimator in the sales department and later moved to the transportation department. During the steel crisis in the 1980's, Wyatt Industries closed, and Charles went to work for Spring Branch School District where he headed the Special Education Transportation Division. Later, Wyatt re-opened as Wyatt Field Services, and Charles rejoined the team as an Estimator until retirement.

Charles made several moves during his life, from Cat Spring to Bellville, then Houston, then Katy, and then to Sealy. After retirement, Charles and Doris lived their dream traveling all over the world. Their "4th child" Sammy, and adorable Maltese, went everywhere! Floyd and Terri Hurry were their long-time camping buddies and travel companions; they met when Linda and Danny were in kindergarten and took family vacations throughout the years. Their most memorable trip was the Christmas market river boat cruise on the Rhein River in Germany. They also explored the East Coast, West Coast, Canada, and Middle America in their RV, but their favorite place was Ouray, Colorado!

Charles enjoyed raising cattle on the family property in Cat Spring which became a family tradition. He loved tractors, trains, and lawn mowers, and was a man who was always ready to help anyone fix, build, repair, or install anything. Charles loved music. He played the piano by ear, and his repertoire included ragtime and hymns. He played the trombone in high school and was a member of the school's jazz band. He loved polka music, especially Mollie B's music and shows. Some of their weekend travels included attending Mollie B's polka parties and the annual trip to Wurstfest in New Braunfels.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Doris; children, Danny Bretschneider and wife, Kelly, Cheryl Spivey, and Danette Cudd; grandchildren, J.D. Spivey, Stephen Spivey (Azia), Ryan Bretschneider, Justin Cudd, Macy Bretschneider-Winkler (Joe), Katelyn Spivey, and Kayla Cudd; great-grandchildren, Jakub (Stephen & Azia), and one on the way (Katelyn); sister-in-law, Danna Harms and husband, Scott; and numerous other family and friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Leona.

His children remember him as a kind, loving, patient, and gentle father. Although the quiet hero is gone, the legacy he left will live forever in the hearts of those he touched.

Special thanks to the Vantage Hospice staff, and to Sharon Cudd and Azia for being Doris' guardian Angels as they always appeared at times of need.

History of Wyatt M. Brooks Died December 09, 1913

Bellville, Tex, Dec 10, '13

On Tuesday afternoon just as the sun was setting and already lost behind the dark threating clouds, and the great Brazos flood was hanging over its valley from hill to hill and dealing death and destruction, one who had already given up the fight and calling for rest chose that day, full of sorrow, gloom and pathos, as the closing chapter of a long life and career, fully in keeping with the scenes around him, Wyatt M. Brooks, at the age of eight-five years and ten months, without pain or sickness, just simply became weary of his burdens and quit the fight and went to sleep and one more of the few remaining old citizens and Texas pioneers has vanished, leaving the work he began to a younger generation.

For 43 years he lived at the Brooks home on the hill overlooking the town and noted every change during all these years. The only near relatives he leaves is one sister in Waller county, one brother in Hays county and one son, J. W. Brooks, of this place, who is a surveyor and prominently know here.

Wyatt Marion Brooks was born in Upshur county, Georgia, January 24, 1828, of American parentage. On his father's side the Scotch blood prevailed, while on his mother's side, the Irish blood prevailed. He was the second son and third child of a family of eight children all reaching adult age in life and all save one reaching the age of 50 years or more.

When about 14 years of age his father removed from Georgia to Alabama. Here the subject of this sketch grew to Manhood, familiar with all the joys and hardships incident to poor people in a new country. Upon reaching his majority, he started in life overseeing for two bachelor brothers, whose father's home was on Sundays and other rest days, and it was to this aged man of conservative thought, wealth and influence, that he ever, in after life, pointed to as the guiding star of his earthly aims and hopes, it was to this man's precepts that made him an unfaltering Unionist during the exciting days just before our civil war. But when his adopted State (Texas) seceded, he volunteered and joined the ranks to defend his country in a cause which he believed to be wrong.

In January, 1852, W. M. Brooks removed to Texas and settled at Semponius; two years later he removed to Bellville, where he remained in and around until his death. After coming to Texas, he followed the carpenter's trade, together with cotton gin and press pin press (???) until the breaking out of the civil war.

In 1855, he married Louise Jane Atkinson, a native of Austin county, who died August 20th, 1894. Early in 1861 he joined the Confederate army, 26th Texas Cavalry, known as DeBray's Regiment, Company H, Frank Dupree, Captain, in which command he remained until the close of the war in 1865.

The first two years of the war were spent in and around Galveston, doing coast duties. The remaining two years were spent in facing the enemy in real warfare. After the war, he returned home to his family, wrecked in physical health and of his meager accumulations of worldly possessions, and started in life anew as best he could. In boyhood he was familiar with Indian outbreaks and murders, notably that of the burning and almost total destruction of the inhabitants of Ronevak, Ga., a small town near where his father lived. Has killed bear within two and a half miles of the court house at Bellville and deer, turkeys and smaller game almost within the town limits. Quite a number of times he has pointed out the buildings still standing that were here when he came to Bellville, all of which have been removed except one now owned, and occupied by S. A. Hill.

Brune, Arlen Gene (1944-2023)

Arlen Gene Brune was born to Arno and Alice Mae (Reeder) Brune on July 20, 1944 in La Grange, Texas. He saddled up for his last ride on November 18, 2023 at the age of 79.

He was baptized into the Christian faith on September 24, 1944, sponsored by Wilkins and Gladys Brune and Elvie Reeder then confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in New Ulm, Texas on April 14, 1957. He married the love of his life, Gracie Klump on February 27, 2004.

In the true cowboy tradition, he broke too many horses to count, enjoyed calf and team roping with his buddies, spent every Monday night at the 4-H area cheering on his daughter with her horse, Storm, and took his true love Gracie two-stepping as much as possible. After serving as ranch foreman of the 2G Ranch for 36 years, he retired to dedicate time for each and every one of his grandchildren by teaching them how to ride horses, feed cattle, make hay, run a dozer, fish, and get into "just a little bit" of trouble. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need and known for his quick (though sometimes inappropriate) wit and contagious laugh.

The date of birth and death you have for Herbert James belong to Herbert Brune Sr who did not serve in WW II but was married to Lula Brune. Herbert and Lula were buried in Sealy cemetery as well as my parents.

My father Herbert James Brune was born Nov 23, 1921 and died June 17, 2016. He served in World War II and was married to Alice Marie Washam Brune. I am their only daughter Carolyn Marie Brune Gribble. They had a son James Edward Brune who died after one day in the hospital. He is listed correctly. Buckley, Harold Richard (1926-2024)

USFlag

Harold Richard Buckley was born in Sheldon, Texas on January 28, 1926. Harold gained his wings on Sunday, April 28, 2024. He was the son of John William Buckley and Alice Brasher Buckley.

Survivors include daughter, Debbie, and son-in-law, Ronnie Pilcik of Industry, and two granddaughters, Amanda Martinez of Industry and Brittani Firestone, and two great-granddaughters, Sophie Martinez, and Ava Martinez. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Joy Smith and Elaine Snow, two brothers-in-law, Donald Snow and Ray Stanford, and many nieces and nephews. Harold left behind a special friend, Alice Neel.

Harold graduated from Waller High School after 11 years. He enlisted in the Navy before his 18th birthday with his father's signature but would have been drafted at 18 anyway. World War II started when Japan attacked the US and destroyed much of our Pacific fleet by bombing Pearl Harbor. Harold served active duty from January 21, 1944 to February 16, 1946, and received an Honorary Discharge as the war ended with the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945 under the US leadership of President Harry Truman. After the war, Harold returned to Waller and met Bobbie Snow and they married on Nov 24, 1949. On Jan 10, 1956, the family welcomed their only child, Debbie; she was always her Daddy's girl.

Harold was a 'jack of all trades' fixing almost anything broken. He worked on diesel engines in the service and post service, repaired automobiles at a shop in Waller. Seeking more stable employment, Harold went to work for Shell Oil and worked seven days on and seven days off. The family followed the job, living in Freeport, Galveston, and Houston before returning home to Waller to raise their family. In Waller, Harold worked for Southwestern Bell, holding many positions, and after 31 years, retired when he was 55. After finishing all his retirement 'honey-dos', he was ready to return to work. He received his electrical license and wired new houses. However, he and Bobbie wanted a job they could do together, so they started installing wallpaper for Eddie Pilcik and others. Man, that was a hard job. Harold and Bobbie went on to open a Radio Shack in Bellville. Having a servant's heart, Harold also drove a school bus in Bellville, as there was such a need.

Through the years Harold and Bobbie had many adventures. They purchased a camper and discovered their love for travel and the outdoors. During these times, they made lifelong friends who shared their passion. Harold and Bobbie were avid fishermen and would fish for crappie all night on the piers of Lake Somerville. Granddaughters, Amanda and Brittani, have the fondest memories of weeks spent in summers, building campfires, feeding the animals Cheerios, and fishing and swimming.

Harold loved to garden and make Bobbie happy with flower beds. The Masonic Lodge in Bellville was very important to him. He was a past Master and served as secretary of the lodge for many years. Harold was also a member of the Scottish Rite. Later Harold joined the Order of the Eastern Star with Bobbie, her mother, Annie Snow, and two of her sisters, Barbara Stanford and Mary Ragland, and served as a Worthy Patron and on many committees.

Babysitting the granddaughters a couple of days a week for Debbie was such a pleasure. Amanda got to watch soap operas with Nana, and Brittani loved to read Poppy "The Little Train That Could" over and over. Many memories are shared and stories told.

After a battle with COPD, Bobbie died in September of 2010. Harold supported and cared for Bobbie and met every need without complaint. He wrote a story called "2010 the Worst and the Best Year of My Life" as a Memorial to his beloved Bobbie. During his 98 years, Harold had many special times. He and Bobbie's Sunday lunches with the "Snow Clan' was a wonderful time with laughter and intense card games. And Harold's daily coffee with friends at Newman's Bakery was very special. Mike Newman loved his older 'regulars' and each appreciated him. They are probably enjoying a heavenly cup together!

By chance, Harold met Alice Neel. Both attended the Bellville Methodist Church and shared the loss of their spouses. They each helped the other through the difficult times. Harold repaired things around Alice's house, and Alice fixed home-cooked meals. For 13 years they enjoyed each other's company. We are very thankful for her and for the support given to Harold through his journey to Heaven. The day he died, he smiled at her when she came to visit and say goodbye.

In July 2023, Harold chose to move to Argent Court Assisted Living. He knew he needed help but did not want to burden anyone. He thrived there and was friends with many of the residents and the kind and helpful Resident Assistants. Harold was even voted 'Valentine King' by the residents.

Harold was a wonderful and kind gentleman. It was a blessing to have had him for so long!

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Schmidt Funeral Home, 12029 Hwy. 36 South, Bellville, Texas, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. A masonic graveside service will follow at Oak Knoll Cemetery.

Burttschell, Alice Vernell (Reichardt) (1930-2016)

Alice Vernell (Reichardt) Burttschell was born in Sealy on March 19, 1930 to Alice and Otto Reichardt. She attended school in Cat Spring through grade nine, and then graduated from Sealy High School in 1947. On June 3, 1950, she married the love of her life, Joe Burttschell. Together they raised four children, Bill, Kathy, Michael, and John.

Alice started school in Cat Spring where she was tutored in English since she spoke only German at the time. Through grade nine, she lived with her grandmother in town during the week and then went to the farm on the weekends. After graduating from Sealy High School, she went to work for E.R. Squib and Company in Houston. She rode the bus to Sealy on weekends to see Joe, and they went to the movies in Sealy or to a dance in Bellville, Coshatte, Sealy, Mixville, or Cat Spring. They danced a million miles over the next 62 years and their favorite was swing dancing to the big band sound.

In 1948, she attended her first Aggie football game with Joe, dressed to the hilt, including a cobalt velvet tam and an Aggie mum corsage - a testament to her ever-present sense of style and the beginning of her lifelong passion for A&M. After beginning their married life in Sealy on September 12, 1951, Joe came home with the news that Humble Oil was transferring him to Louisiana. Bill was born the next day, and they moved to Louisiana two weeks later. After two years in Louisiana, they returned to Sealy where they became active members of the community. For 10 years, they owned and operated the White Auto Store downtown, and in 1978, she began a 21-year career as a florist. She shared her talent and passion for people and flowers at Leah's Petals and Pots, the floral department at Bill's Supermarket, and at the Blossom Cottage. After she retired in 2009, her talents for flower arranging continued from home upon special request for countless weddings, funerals, and special occasions.

Alice enjoyed her years of participation with the Bluebonnet Society and Trinity Lutheran Church and choir. She will be forever remembered for opening her home to one and all for showers, weddings, and gatherings of any kind, and especially for her love of Christmas decorating and entertaining. But at her very core was an unwavering love and devotion to her family which was never more evident than during holiday gatherings.

All who knew here would agree that Alice was a woman of great integrity, style, dignity, and grace, and an amazing role model for her family and friends. Countless friends and family benefitted from her generous spirit and supportive nature; she could always be counted on to be your biggest fan.

Alice is survived by her son, Bill, and wife, Karen, of San Felipe; daughter, Kathy, and husband, Joe, of Austin; and son, John, of Cat Spring; in addition to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; and son, Michael.

Alice left us on January 2, 2016. Her family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Krishnaswamy and his staff at Sealy Urgent Care for their care of this special lady.

Burttschell, Joe Edward (1929-2012)

Joe Burttschell was born on February 24, 1929 to Walter Anton and Laura Brune Burttschell. After graduation from Sealy High School in 1946, Joe attended Tarleton State University for 2 years before transferring to Texas A&M where he was a proud graduate of the Class of '50.

On June 3, 1950, he married the love of his life, Alice Vernell Reichardt. Together they raised 4 children, Bill, Kathy, Michael, and John, and danced a million miles together.

Joe had a 37-year career with Exxon/Mobil, beginning as a roustabout at the Katy Humble plant and ending as an East Texas Division supervisor. Following his retirement in 1986, he spent many years ranching in Sealy and Cat Spring. In recent years, Joe served both the City of Sealy and the City of San Felipe as Municipal Judge.

Joe demonstrated his concern and care of his community through his active membership in numerous organizations, Trinity Lutheran Church, Sealy Lions Club, Sealy Cemetery Association Board, Cat Spring Agricultural Society, Stephen F. Austin Golf Association, Texas A&M Century Club, and Scholarship Chair of the Austin County A&M Club. He was involved with the Sealy Little League for over 30 years where he served in numerous roles, ranging from Coach to President of the League. During his time on the Parks and Recreation Board, he was instrumental in updating the community sports facilities, and after advocating for the creation of a T-ball field was honored to have the T-ball field named for him. His membership in the Sealy Tiger Booster Club spans decades, and he was the recipient of the "Old Man Award" for his support of Sealy Tiger Athletics.

An avid sports fan throughout his life, Joe traveled everywhere to watch his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's events, as well as his Texas Aggies, Sealy Tigers, and Houston Astros. He also thoroughly enjoyed times hunting and golfing with family and friends.

Whether you knew him as Joe, Joe Edward, JEB, Butch, Judge, Honey, Daddy, or Popo, all knew the same man: a wise, fair, humble man who valued family above all else and who lived his life demonstrating the utmost selflessness and care for others. He was the rare person who truly never said a bad word about anyone. He handled his battle with cancer with great courage, dignity and optimism, and continued to bring joy to the lives of his loved ones and to serve as a role model to the end. Joe was not only a husband, father, uncle, and grandfather, but also a best friend and mentor all those who loved him.

Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Alice Burttschell; son, Bill, and wife, Karen, of San Felipe; Kathy, and husband, Joe, of Austin; and son, John, of Cat Spring; in addition to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael.

After a long battle with cancer, Joe Burttschell left his loved ones on his 62nd wedding anniversary, June 3, 2012. His family would like to thank the caregivers at MD Anderson Hospital and Life's Solutions Hospice Care, Inc. for their care of this beloved man.
