Bellville Times

Annetta Marilyn Black of Bellville passed away on Saturday Feb. 16, 2013 in Houston. She was 75 years old. Annetta was comforted in her final days by the presence of her loving family.

"Netta” was raised in Northwest Indiana. She met Jerry, who would become her husband for 57 years, at Glen Park Baptist Church. Together they raised three children and moved to the south suburbs of Chicago, where they were involved in the scores of school, church and neighborhood activities that made them an important part of the community. She moved with her family to Baytown, in 1977, where they lived until retiring to Bellville in 1993.

Netta was an accomplished seamstress with a talent for design. She sang in the church choir and loved to work with the flowers in her garden, collect antiques and John Grisham books. Mostly, Netta enjoyed planning family functions and doting after her Texas family and grandchildren. She was active in the First Baptist Church of Baytown, then later at Brenham's First Baptist.

She was preceded in death by parents Bill and Mary Jones, sister Betty Giles, brother Billy Jones and son Daniel Black. She is survived by her husband Jerry Black, her daughter Debra Collins and son David (Betsy) Black, grandchildren Seth Collins, Lanie (Jeremy) Garrett, Melody Black (fiancée Justin Brown), Travis (fiancée Jaylynn Julian), Justin (fiancée Rita Janacek), Jessica and Emily Black.

Blazek, Jacqueline Ann (Scrogin) (1936-2018)

Jacqueline Ann Blazek received her call to come "Home" on August 11, 2018. She would be the first to tell you that her work here is done and that new adventures await. A lifelong woman of faith, she has been reunited, a pain free and healthy, with family and friends that have gone "Home" before her.

Born July 16, 1936 to Bernard and Bessie Scrogin of Wallis, Texas, she was the oldest of three children. Jackie's childhood was filled with travel with her parents and two sisters, Marilyn and Betsy. Her parents also instilled in her and her sisters that value of family, a strong belief of God and living according to His word, and their inherent obligation to serve others.

Jackie graduated from Wallis High School and received an Associate Degree from Wharton County Junior College. She shortly thereafter married the love of her lift Alvin Joe Blazek in Hunstville, Texas. They returned to Wallis and ultimately moved to Richmond, Texas where Jackie was employed with the Lamar Consolidated ISD as an instructional aid. She positively impacted countless numbers of young people throughout her career and life. She was a lifelong member of Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion of Wallis. Jackie was a dedicated wife and mother who believed it was her responsibility to support her husband and daughters first and worry about herself later. She acquired, through her outgoing and high energy nature, an array of friends that she enjoyed spending time with. Playing Bunco, "42”, golfing, fishing, playing Wahoo, and trips to Las Vegas were just some of the activities that involved both family and friends throughout her life and it was truly "a life well lived".

The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Jackie's special friends Thelma Steamer and Jackie Jackson. They provided support and care during very difficult times. There are angels on Earth because there is no other way to describe the attention and love these two brought into Jackie's life. A heartfelt thank you also to the caregivers that touched her life and ours. You are all very special people.

Jackie is survived by her sister Marilyn Baker of Houston, Texas, daughter Pamela and husband Richard Puig of Fredericksburg, Texas, daughter Paula and husband Michael Lanier of Garwood, Texas. Affectionately called "Nanny” she is also survived by granddaughter Alyson and husband Kevin Hoffman of Matthews, Texas and granddaughter Emily Puig of Los Angeles, California. Bogar, Jan "John" (1892-1946)

USFlag

Jan was born in Hovezi, Vsetin District, Czech Republic. Jan had to remain in the Czech Republic to serve his military obligations along with his older brother, Josef Bogar. Jan and Josef wasn't able to come with their parents, Rosalia Sula and Martin Bogar, their sister, Anna, and younger brother, Pavel to Texas in 1911. Jan first arrived in Boston, Mass. about 1921, and than traveled to Texas. Brother, Josef, decided to go back to the Czech Republic.

Jan married Annie Kutra, a daughter of Anna Vesely and John Kutra, on February 10, 1925 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Frydek, Austin County, Texas. They had children, Albina, Ludmilla " Lillie", and Louis " Bo". Unfortunately, Annie died soon after Louis was born June 3, 1931 from postpartum hemorrhage. Jan realized that he would be unable to take care of his three young children and bring in the cotton crop. So Annie's parents took care of baby Louis, and three year old Lillie. The oldest, Albina, five years old, was taken care of by Albina Kutra and Frank Vancik.

Jan learned of a single lady from Moulton, Karolina " Carrie" Rothbauer, and soon married her on August 1, 1932. Their marriage license was filed in Austin County, Texas. Jan was able to bring all his children together again. They lived in Moulton for a few years. On June 15, 1934, Jan and Karolina had twins born in the Shiner Hospital, which was the first set of twins born in that hospital. Frances and Frank joined the growing family. Sometime in 1937, Jan decided to move the family back to the Frydek area to be near his first wife's family and his father, Martin, and brother, Paul, and his family.

Jan died in 1946 at home in Frydek from a brain aneurysm . Carrie and the children had to bring in the crops. By this time, the oldest daughter, Albina, had married on February 12, 1947, and living with her husband on the Mlcak farm. Late 1949, Carrie married her brother in law, Paul, who was a widower. Approximately eight months later, Paul died in 1950 from a brain aneurysm, also.

Bosse, Lillie Mae (Zachas, Abel) (1915-2017)

The Sealy News, October 13, 2017:

Lillie Mae Abel Bosse died Oct. 9, 2017 in Bellville, Texas at the age of 102. Lillie was born on Feb. 6, 1915 to Annie and Charlie Zachas in Cat Spring, Texas. She was confirmed and served as a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Cat Spring. She was married to Leonard Ida Abel on April 26, 1932 until his death on Oct. 12, 1971.

On Dec. 1, 1979, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bellville, Texas, she married Raymond Bosse, who preceded her in death on April 6, 2011. Lillie met both Leonard and Raymond at the Coshatta Agriculture Society Hall dance where she loved to polka and waltz.

Lillie attended the Cleveland Community School and frequently reminded the younger generations that she rode a horse to school and spoke primarily German. Although she spent the majority of her life as a wife, mother, and homemaker, she also worked in retail and floral shops as well as a sitter at the hospital to provide care for others.

Some of her favorite things to do included playing dominoes, gardening, cooking, baking, and looking through cookbooks for new recipes. Recipe clippings from newspapers and magazines filled her recipe books and several drawers in her kitchen. It was not unusual to come to her home and hear her say, "I made a new cake recipe today. I want you to try it. Let's have some coffee." This usually accompanied a game of 88, 80, 42, or straight dominoes. Gardening vegetables, planting pretty flowers, and canning were other labors of love that she enjoyed. She liked having a pretty yard and gave her plants personalities. When cold weather approached, she would often comment that she felt sorry for the plants and needed to get them inside "before they got cold." Or she'd water them and say that they "looked a lot happier."

Most of all, Lillie enjoyed being with family and friends. Whenever her children and grandchildren called her to make arrangements for an outing or dinner, she always responded, "I'll have my shoes on." On Oct. 9 at 8:13 a.m., the Lord called for Lillie to join Him in heaven and she responded, "I am ready. I have my shoes on."

Lillie's legacy spans five generations. She is survived by her four children, Charles Abel, Travis Abel and wife, Diane, Dolores Fojt, and Joy Mahaffey; as well as stepson, Don Bosse and wife, Adrienne, and step-daughter-in-law, Carol Bosse; twelve grandchildren, Debra Horwedel and husband, Ken, Loyce Pacher, Patti Sebesta and husband, Carl, Leonard "Buddy" Fojt and wife, Cheryl, Kathy Patrick-Maxwell and husband, Jamie, Scott Abel and wife, Wanda, Terri Nelson and husband, Donald, Jason Abel, Kristi Tindall and husband, Lance, McDavid (Mac) Mahaffey and his wife, Mary Ellen, Matthew (Bill) Mahaffey and wife, Alexandra, John Mahaffey and wife, Candace. Also included are her step-grandchildren, Jason Bosse and wife, Kim, Kyle Bosse and wife, Lauren, Sharon Lin and husband, Jesse, Susan Vasquez and husband, Erik. In all, 32 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren complete this remarkable woman's family tree.

Lillie's family and friends have been blessed to share in her long life. They want to thank the staff at Rose Hill Retirement Center and Compassionate Care Hospice with special thanks to nurses Sharon Graham and Stacey Kmiec who provided loving care and support as Lillie transitioned to her heavenly home. He grew up in the Burleigh farming community and attended elementary school at Roach Prairie School, followed by graduation from Bellville High School.

Following graduation, Charles worked as a line foreman with the LCRA. He then managed a service station in Bellville, at which time he married Lillie Schubert from Sealy.

They resided in Bellville and were blessed with the birth of their first son, Charles Waddel. They moved with their infant son to the Hacienda community into a small, one bedroom house on the property that eventually became their permanent home on Grubbs Road in Sealy. They resided there for the remainder of their lives. During the following years, they had a daughter, Carol Joy, and two more sons, Jack William and Bruce Jerome.

Charles farmed cotton, corn and milo, baled hay, ran a dairy and helped his father-in-law, Max Schubert, at his cotton gin. He was interested in improving the profession of milk producers and served as secretary of the American Milk Producers Incorporated. He raised registered Guernsey dairy cows and showed these cattle at various dairy days and county fairs across Texas. He also won Grand Champion Heifer at the Houston Livestock Show.

Later, after retiring from the dairy, he transitioned into ranching. Charles worked extremely hard to provide for his family and loved the land and his surrounding community. He was deeply devoted to his church, the First United Methodist Church in Sealy, where he served on the Lord's Acre/Hour Program, Methodist Men's Club and as a church board member.

In addition to his family and church, he was one of the founding fathers of the Austin County Fair Association, holding the office of fair president for many years and ending his tenure as fair manager. He was tremendously proud of the fair, and its growth, development and increased opportunities for the youth of the county. Relevant to the fair, he supported the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, serving as chairman of the Austin County Go Texan Committee and chairman of the Hay Hauling Contest.

During these years, Charles and his wife, Lillie, were members of the Austin County Square Dance Team on Horseback and the Austin County Emergency Unit. Community involvement did not end with his church, fair and rodeo.

He was highly involved with his three sons in the Boy Scouts of America, during which time he achieved the Silver Beaver Award, served on the District Committee of the David Crockett District and was scout master to many in Sealy Troup 557. The boys remember many trips to El Rancho Cima, Camp Strake and his own campsite on the Mill Creek for scout camp-outs and jubilees.

In addition to his involvement in scouts, he served on the Austin County School Board. This board governed the county rural schools prior to their incorporation into the Sealy and Bellville School Districts. He was a member of the parent teacher association, served on the Millcreek Drainage District and was involved with the Austin County Gun Club, Order of the Sons of Hermann and Woodmen of the World.

Charles William Brandes was dearly loved and looked up to by his grandchildren, who called him, "Poppa". There are many stories they have shared over and over about their "Poppa" that will keep them laughing for hours.

He gave them one of the best gifts in life - his time. They all helped him on his farm at one time or another. He had many funny sayings, such as "root hog or die" during meals and told stories of riding his horse, Rosenwassa, to school while getting involved in many escapades.

They remember one special saying he taught them: "A man is as good as his word." He survived many animal attacks and farm injuries, turning each incident into a funny story for his grandchildren. He was their John Wayne and Rambo all rolled into one. He will remain a vivid memory in the lives of all his family members forever.

THE FAMILY REMEMBERS
By MARY HOGAN, SEALY NEWS Staff Writer
Waddel Brandes still remembers the marble his father, Charles William "C.W." Brandes used to carry in his pocket.

"The golden rule was on the marble - 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,' Waddel Brandes said.

And throughout his life, C.W. did just that, dedicating his time to serving his community and family.

C.W. Brandes, 86, passed away Jan. 28 in Brookshire.

He leaves behind a legacy of building up his community, having served for 40 years with the Austin County Fair Association as one of the founders, among other commitments.

His daughter-in-law, Sharon Brandes, still remembers how C.W. began the tradition of bringing big-name talent to the Austin County Fair.

He had an eye for stars from the very beginning. She looked forward to his return every year from the convention where he would book musical talent.

One year, C.W. came back with the news that a new country artist would perform at the county fair.

"And I can remember saying, 'I've never heard of him,' and he said, ‘Well, you wait and see he's up and coming and he's going to be big,'" she said.

And C.W. was right. A week before the fair, that new country artist - Garth Brooks - won the Country Music Association's Horizon Award for best new artist.

It was his ability - and willingness - to get things done that made him a leader, according to Waddel Brandes.

"He was the kind of person who would leave an impression," he said. "He was a doer, he would get up and get things done. He never complained.

"He was a good leader," he added. "Whenever he g

Jacquelyn "Granny Jackie" Brandes passed away peacefully on January 8th, 2022 and went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Jackie was one of four children born to Herbert and Mandoline Goebel on July 20, 1946. She grew up in Sealy, Texas, and graduated from Sealy High School. Jackie played basketball, volleyball, was a Harvest Festival Princess Candidate, Vice-President of the Freshman Class, attended Bluebonnet Girls State, and was the Senior Class Secretary. Shortly after high school, Jackie married Waddel Brandes and their union was blessed with four children known as the cotton tops. Throughout the years Jackie worked as a secretary for the Sealy ISD, Assistant Administrator for Azalea Manor Nursing Home in Sealy, Assistant Administrator for the Retirement Care Center in Hempstead, Sales Clerk for Creekmore Hardware and Roofing in Sealy, Sales Representative for Manufactured Homes in Sealy and Brookshire, all the while raising her family. Jackie has been a longtime member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Bellville, TX.

Jackie was known in Sealy as a master seamstress and truly loved to help people with any kind of sewing project. Throughout the years she made beautiful draperies, wedding dresses, clothing, costumes, evening apparel, sporting attire, and many other items. She was truly a Picasso of the sewing machine. She was once asked if there was anything you couldn't make on a sewing machine and her simple answer was no.

Jackie was considered by many to be our family historian and "keeper of the records". She took great pride and enjoyment knowing so many special facts and stories about those who we call family. Jackie had an incredible bond with her cousins, nieces, nephews and kept in close contact with them her entire life. Jackie was also known as being an incredible cook. She took great joy in making her famous chocolate chip cookies and watching her grandchildren beg for more when the container ran dry. Jackie also loved to help people and spent many hours ensuring the community's military service members were never forgotten.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Mandoline Goebel; her brother, Joe Goebel; sister, Loyce Clements; sisters-in-law, Aiko and Rita; and grandson, Tyler Mazac.

She is survived by her brother, Vernon Goebel and wife, Martha, children, Tracey and husband, James O'Neil, Mason Brandes, and Angela Leschper, Stacy Brandes and wife, Kaarin, and Darren Brandes; grandchildren, Ashley Brandes, Charles "Charlie" Brandes Jr., Sydney Brandes, Joshua Brandes, Leah Brandes, Jarrett Brandes, Grayson Brandes, Jenna O'Neil, Jamie O'Neil, Mandelynn O'Neil; great-grandchildren, Brooklynn Brandes, Liliana Aguilar, Maddison Aguilar, and Hali Sellers.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the various caregivers, friends, and family who provided the best care, moral support, and sacrificed so much for Jackie during these difficult times, especially Peggy Ruther, Don Krumpitz, Julia Johnston, Renee Gaskin, Steven Karakos, Diane Resendez, Angela Leschper, and the Veranda House in Sealy.

Visitation Monday, July 15, 2013 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Knesek Bros. Hwy 36 Chapel 1140 Meyer St., Sealy, TX 77474

Memorial gifts may be made to: First United Methodist Church

Obituary Lillie Brandes Lillie Willimae Schubert was born December 7th, 1923 in Sealy, Texas to Max and Dora Schubert. She grew up the youngest of four children, two sisters and one brother, in the Peter's Hacienda community about seven miles north of Sealy. Her father ran a cotton gin next to their home, where she and her siblings spent endless summer days playing to the constant thumping of the distinctive cotton gin engine.

Lillie was quite the free spirit. She loved dancing, music, writing, art, sewing and made straight "A's" all through school. Her senior year at Sealy High School, she met her true love, Charles William Brandes, from the Burleigh community near Bellville. They were married December 21st, 1940.

The following year, she gave Charles a son, Charles Waddel. They lived in a tiny house on a modest farm not far from her parents.

Charles (CW) built a dairy farm and raised all the food for their cattle. Waddel quickly learned to help.

Meanwhile, they built a larger home and were blessed with a daughter, Carol Joy, and then sons Jack William and Bruce Jerome.

Lillie was kept quite busy raising their children, keeping house, home cooking every meal, and supporting her husband who worked before dawn until after dark each day. She was very active in the First United Methodist Church - United Methodist Women, choir member, Choir Director, Harvest Festival Team and any place where a hand was needed.

She supported Charles as he served in the Austin County Fair, working in the fair office by his side each and every year, Peter's Hall Mother's Day Celebrations and many others. The Friendship Club was one of her fondest community involvements.

She and Charles were members of the Austin County Square Dance Team on Horseback as well as the Supper Club.

Lillie loved flowers. Her yard was gorgeous and she had the largest, most beautiful deep pink bougainvillea planted next to her garage that grew taller than she stood. She rooted many plants and shared them with others. Her name aptly reflects her passion for the pure beauty she found in her plants of many kinds.

She hunted and fished with Charles whenever time allowed. She was a fierce competitor, and often returned home with the largest trophy.

While her children were young, every Good Friday she had a family fishing event at their property on the Mill Creek. It was simple but much fun for the kids to see who could catch the largest perch.

When the children were older, they made many family fishing trips to Matagorda and Galveston and surrounding lakes. Lillie always, without fail, caught the largest fish. She always won.

When Bruce, the youngest, left home for the Navy, Lillie entered cosmetology school. She always took great pride in how her hair looked, and served the public as a beautician in Houston for over about ten years. She loved to tell funny stories of her co-workers and clients, and how nice it made her feel to serve them. Eventually, her children all married, and grandchildren came onto the scene.

She was re-named "Mom Mom" and Charles was re-named "Poppa". Very quickly the grandchildren knew they would always find cookies and other home made goodies when they went to visit Mom Mom and Poppa. They would sit for hours listening to Poppa's stories while Mom Mom happily kept bringing out goodies. She was well known around the neighborhood for her cinnamon rolls, cookies, and dozens and dozens of cakes. No one ever stepped into her home that they were not served her home made sweets She made a warm, comfortable home for all of them to come back to visit at any time.

Christmas, Easter and birthdays were always a great event. She never tired of it. She always longed for stories of what the children and grandchildren were doing. She loved the pictures and hand drawings they brought to her. Her refrigerator was so full of colored pictures and notes and traced hands. She loved them all - each and every one. Even after her beloved Charles passed away, she still had goodies waiting for who ever would visit. When she could no longer drive, her grocery list would always include ingredients to keep goodies in stock - just in case. Anyone's visit meant everything to her.

Lillie had a nasty bout with cancer. She became the ultimate example of the power of positive thinking. She kept repeating, "No, no! I'm going to be just fine. God is not ready for me, yet!" She was right. She always won. She instilled strong will and positive force within all her children. Everyone who knew her closely could see she was an eternal optimist and pillar of strength. No one ever heard her complain. It was her prayer that her children would carry this forward.

Lillie was preceded in death by parents, Max and Dora Schubert, sisters Birdie Schroeder and Mary Belle Yeamans, brother Roy Schubert, husband Charles William Brandes, and great grandson Ryeland Michael Brandes.

She is survived by sons Charles Waddel Brandes and wife Barbara, Jack William Brandes and wife Sharon, Bruce Jerome Brandes and wife Jacquelyn, daughter Carol Joy (Brandes) Ray and husband Gary; grandchildren Tracey (Brandes) O'Neil and husband Jim, Mason Brandes and fiancée Angela Leschper, Stacy Brandes and wife Karin, Darren Brandes and wife Cindy, Benn Copeland, Trey Copeland and wife Aimee, Jeff Brandes and wife Jennifer, Jody (Lezak) Chesshir and husband Max, Nicolas Brandes, Stephen Brandes and wife Heather; great-grandchildren Charley Brandes, Ashley (Brandes) Aguilar, Leah Brandes, Tyler Mazac, Jenna O'Neil, twins Mandie and Jamie O'Neil, Sydney Brandes, Joshua Brandes, Jarrett Brandes, Grayson Brandes, Hunter Thielemann, Kaden Thielemann, Claire Copeland, Grace Copeland, Ethan Copeland, Eva Copeland, Brennan Brandes, Breanna Brandes, Baylee Brandes, Lauren Chesshir, Madison Brandes; and great-great-grandchildren Brooklynn Aguilar, Lilliana Aguilar, and Madison Aguilar.

The family wishes to especially thank Mrs. Etta Hall for her loving kindness and care given to their mother during her lengthy illness. No gift is greater that the gift of love. Mrs. Etta, you are truly appreciated and loved.
