Miller, Jack Wilford (1931-2022)

USFlag[Veteran] Korea, SFC, US Navy, US Navy; SFC US Army 1952-54 [Family] Father: Merle Wilford Miller, Mother: Alice Mae Alexander [Cemetery] San Felipe de Austin Cemetery () , FG

Jack was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was known to his grandchildren and great grandchildren as PaPa Jack.

Jack was born in Houston Texas to Merle W. Miller and Alice Mae Miller. He and his wife of 72 years, Clara, enjoyed taking vacations with their family when their children were at home and later with his daughter and son-in-law. He enjoyed a daily walk and seeing the beginning of each new day. His standard was to be able to go to bed at night and think back over the day and ask himself, "what did I do constructive today?" For Jack, this was never a problem. He did something every day that was constructive. He also believed that if something was made by man, he could fix it. He truly was a "Jack" of all trades.

Jack enlisted in the Navy first, as a medic and sailed to Haiti and Guantanamo Bay Cuba. He then did a branch transfer when the Korean war broke out and served in the U.S. Army as an M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage (Quad Fifty) Half-Track commander reaching the rank of Sergeant First Class. When the war ended, he was on the 38th Parallel on the front lines. At the end of the war he received an Honorable Discharge from the Army and returned to civilian life.

Jack was a member of the Pasadena Boulevard United Methodist Church and then the San Felipe United Methodist Church. He served in several offices while a member of these two churches. Jack started at Walgreens after the war, then moved to Folgers and finally to the Lubrizol Corporation. He retired from their Bayport plant after a long fulfilling career.

Jack was also a Master Mason. He was raised at Pasadena Lodge 1155, then transferred to Brookshire Lodge 1066, and finally to the Olive branch Lodge 26 in San Felipe, Texas. He was a life member of the VFW and a member of American Legion post 442 in Sealy Texas.

Jack was a great friend to many people and helped many people during his life. When he saw a need, be it a person or an organization, he was always willing to help. He was also an extremely good dominoes player as his family can attest to.

He will be greatly missed by his family, all his many friends, and his church family.

Millican, Robert Hemphill (1750-1836)

SFA Old 300, Notable person [Family] Father: William Thomas Millican, Mother: Mary Branham, Spouse: Nancy Jane McNiel  () , FG , FS

Biography; ; Robert Hemphill Millican, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists, the son of William and Mary Millican, was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, in 1750. He married Nancy Jane McNeil in the 1770s and arrived in Texas in December 1821. He brought two married sons, William T. and James D., with their families, a widowed daughter with her family, six other sons, and one daughter. Millican received title to 2½ sitios of land in the big bend of the Brazos River in what is now Brazos County on July 16, 1824. Horatio Chriesman presented his bill for surveying the land in October 1824. Sometime before November 1824 Millican's home was the site of an election of militia officers. The census of March 1826 classified him as a farmer and stock raiser aged over fifty; his household included his wife, Nancy Jane (over fifty), four sons, two daughters, three servants, and two slaves. The census carried a note that he was building a grain mill on the Brazos River. Millican died during the Runaway Scrape in April 1836, of pneumonia and measles, on the bank of the Trinity River just above the town of Liberty. He was buried there on the riverbank. He was survived by his wife, eight sons, and two daughters. Mrs. Millican married William S. Ellis on June 11, 1838.

Millican, William Templeton (1783-1843)

USFlag SFA Old 300, Notable person [Veteran]  [Family] Father: Robert Hemphill Millican, Mother: Nancy Jane McNeil, Spouse: Libitha  () , FG , FS

Millican served in the Texas army during the Texas Revolution and was to receive a bounty warrant for 320 acres from the secretary of war for service from April 25, 1836, to July 25, 1836.
---
William Templeton Millican, pioneer, attorney, and public official, the son of Nancy Jane (McNeil) and Robert Hemphill Millican, was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, in the 1780s. As a member of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists, he arrived in Texas in December 1821, in company with other members of the Millican family. He received title to one sitio of land in what is now Brazos County on July 16, 1824. Horatio Chriesman had surveyed the land by October, but by September 1825 Millican had moved to land purchased from Henry Whitesides and Jack C. Davis and was in conflict with Henry and Boland Whitesides over his title. The census of March 1826 listed Millican as a farmer and stock raiser, aged between twenty-five and forty. His household included his wife, Libitha, two sons, two daughters, and one slave. In July 1826 his home was a polling place for the election of delegates to a provisional judiciary for the colony. He was elected as a delegate from the Washington district to the Consultation of 1835. In 1839 he was elected justice of the peace for Washington County. He was appointed agent for various Washington County residents in 1840, and in 1841 he was elected justice of the peace for Navasota County. Millican served in the Texas army during the Texas Revolution and was to receive a bounty warrant for 320 acres from the secretary of war for service from April 25, 1836, to July 25, 1836. He died in September 1843, however, and the Brazos County land was not patented to him until October 10, 1845. In a letter filed in the probate court of Brazos County, his brother, Dr. Elliott McNeil Millican, stated that their mother was William Millican's only heir-at-law, and she received title to his land. At his death, Millican was survived by his wife, three sons, and four daughters.

After Joe passed, Rosalee found solace in her life at Minks farm. She enjoyed visits from her children and grandchildren and was very appreciative of her neighbors, Wanda and Freddie Engelbrecht and Adelina and Victor Hernandez. Her beloved cat, Muffin, was a constant companion. She loved to read and always had a book or two checked out of the library. She read the Houston Chronicle daily and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Seija "Anitta" Tanttu was born April 14, 1962 in Finland to Vaito and Ulla Tanttu. She was raised on their dairy farm along with her older brothers Heikki and Kari. She was baptized as a Lutheran Christian, and her faith grew during confirmation and youth group experiences. Anitta started college at the University of Helsinki, studying theology. Then, she moved to Mexico in 1983 as an International Christian Youth Exchange student. There she met her first husband Jimmie Poffenberger. They had five wonderful children together: Mille, Beth, Lydia, Sara, and Sam. They mostly lived in Bellville, Texas. They all lived in Finland for the school year 1997-1998.

Anitta returned to the University of Helsinki and got a bachelor's degree in secondary education with a teaching minor in Spanish. She had also taken some education courses at Prairie View A&M.

Teaching was a real passion for her. She had even home-schooled her girls when they were young. Anitta taught Spanish at Sealy, Columbus, and Fayetteville high schools. She also taught briefly at Bellville HS and Faith Academy. Before teaching Spanish, she was a WIC bi-lingual Infant Nutrition Peer Counselor.

Anitta was warm, humorous, kind, God-loving, strong, independent, and very hard-working. Her other passions and talents were singing, gardening, wood-working, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, and sewing.

In 2003, she and her kids moved into a new home in South Creek Crossing. That same year, she met Jonathan Mollenkopf, the new music director at St. John Lutheran Church. They married in 2006 at the St. John Retreat Center. There were many fun dinners and parties with neighbors, friends, and family at the house in South Creek. Anitta welcomed anyone into her home. She loved having her kids' friends over, whether it was youth from church or fellow students from school. She did not care about someone's skin color, language, financial situation, or any other perceived barrier.

For 11 years, Anitta dealt with her Alzheimer's disease with faith, strength, and grace. Her family would like to express gratitude to her many excellent caregivers over the years: the staff of AlzCare, Cuero Nursing Home, and Hospice of South Texas, caregivers Diana Torrez and Margie McElhaney, and the many friends and family members who sat with her.

Anitta went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 5, 2024.

Anitta is preceded in death by her father Vaito Tanttu. She is survived by her mother Ulla Tanttu, brother Heikki (and wife Oili) Tanttu, brother Kari (and special friend Tarja) Tanttu, nephew Tuomo (and wife Jenni) Tanttu, niece Maija Tanttu, great-nieces, husband Jonathan Mollenkopf, daughter Mille (and husband Daniel) Bradley, daughter Beth, daughter Lydia, daughter Sara (and husband Santiago) Ruiz, son Samuel (and wife Danielle) Poffenberger, and five grandchildren.

SAN JACINTO VETERAN DEAD

Lovic P. Moore, Soldier of Sam Houston's Army, Dies at His Home.

Special to The News.

Temple, Tex., July 28. - The death of Lovic P. Moore, one of the few surviving members of Sam Houston's army and a participant in the struggle at San Jacinto, occurred here yesterday.

Mr. Moore was born in Georgia, spent his youth in Alabama, and came to Texas in 1835. At the time of his death he was 92 years and 8 months of age.

In 1868 he came to Bell County, having married Miss Annie Ayres, daughter of David Ayres, in Washington County in 1835, the year of his arrival in the then Mexican dependency. Three sons and one daughter survive him - D. W., T. T. and David P. Moore of Bell County, and Mrs. C. C. Minnis of Albuquerque, N.M.

Mr. Moore enlisted with Sam Houston in 1836 and served throughout the revolution. He was a member of the party which started to the relief of the Alamo, but which turned back after reaching Gonzales on receiving news of its fall.

From Gonzales his command retreated on foot, being so closely pursued by the Mexicans that they were cut off from their horses. They were pursued as far as the Colorado River, after which they fell back to the Brazos, where Houston held his army until the enemy was located at San Jacinto.

Mr. Moore was on detached duty during the struggle that followed and rendered his country invaluable service. Lovic Moore was the last of the little remnant of Hill County veterans who served in the revolution, whereas a few years since a dozen or more were living. The funeral services were conducted this afternoon from the family residence one mile east of town, where the home has been for many years, an immense concourse of people followed the remains to their last resting place, were (where) services were conducted by Rev. C. R. Wright of Waco, pastor of the Methodist Church.

An Old Texas Gone

Mrs. Mary Ann Moore died last Saturday evening at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Minnis, at the age of 73.

Mrs. Moore was the wife of L. P. Moore, an old Texan, who came from Connecticut in the year 1834 and settled in Washington County, being one of the first settlers. Mr. Moore, with his family, moved to Bell County in 1866 and has lived here ever since. The deceased attended regularly every year with her husband the reunion of the Texas veterans till this year when she could not go on account of her ill health. Mrs. Moore was a member of the Methodist church for fifty years, but did not attend services often on account of deafness. The immediate cause of her death was cancer of the stomach from which she had suffered for fifteen years. She leaves her husband hale and hearty at the age of 79, respected and honored as one of Texas’ noblemen, also four children that Bell county finds price in claiming as citizens; D. P. Moore, Mrs. C. C. Minnis, D. W. and T. T. Moore.

Obituary

On the 4th day of June, 1892, at the age of 73, Mrs. M. A. Moore, in response to the promised call from the Master to His faithful servants, “come up higher,” left this world to enjoy the reward that awaits all who do the will of God.

Mrs. Moore, the deceased, was born at Ithaca, N. Y. on July 22, 1819. She came to Texas in the fall of 1834 with her father, David Ayers, who settled in the territory of what is now known as Washington County, and at that place was married to Mr. L. P. Moore on July 29, 1835.

The life and death of the deceased only adds another strong link to the great chain of evidence that the promises of God will be verified if his children will only be faithful and live up to the standard of the true disciple as taught by the Son of God. The departed raised a family fo four children to manhood and womanhood who reflect honor upon the parents and in whom Bell county finds pride in calling her citizens.

Mrs. Moore was a member of the Methodist church for over fifty years and all who knew her are united in their praises to her memory as a consistent and useful member, kind, generous, charitable and a model type of a true Christian wife and mother, whose life was an example to the world that the finite mind can never fully appreciate.

The deceased suffered many years with ills to which this flesh is heir but despite this she was happy to the last in the consciousness of having lived a useful life; she loved Texas and her people and ever looked forward from year to year to the reunion of her old veterans, of whom she was one, with undisguised joy.

Now let the aged rejoice that the time draws near when they will meet their old friend on the other shore, and the young take new courage from the example set by this servant of God recognizing in her life and death a fulfillment of His promises.

Bob was an extraordinary human being. He was a loyal son, protective brother, loving husband, patient father, fun uncle, proud grandfather, and friend you could always call on. Bob never knew a stranger.

From the time Bob was a young child, he knew he wanted to work in architectural and engineering design. He was an active child and adolescent, loved to build, draw, and constantly learn. While at South Houston High School, he played football, ran track, and held a part-time job. After graduating, Bob attended San Jacinto College and became the youngest quality control inspector on the Apollo Mission space program at Johnson Space Center. A great job for a college freshman with an opportunity to meet several astronauts, which he took full advantage of.

Bob then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Sergeant leading a team of aerial mapping specialists in the intelligence agency during the Vietnam War. During this time, he also started a family with his high school sweetheart who he had wed a couple of years earlier. Always looking for ways to connect with others, he was always game for gathering with his brothers, family, and buddies over a round or two of golf. Bob also enjoyed hosting large groups of family and friends at his Hill Country home and taking them boating on Lake Travis. Like clockwork every fall, one would find Bob and his son at the deer lease on weekends mostly spending time enjoying nature and talking about life. Bob found many ways to bring together those he loved. He will be missed dearly. Yet, we are comforted knowing we are blessed to have received his love and friendship.
