Singleton, Edward Bivens (1920-2015)

USFlag[Veteran] WW2, Dr., USAAF [Family] Father: Albert O. Singleton, Mother: Will Dean Bivens, Spouse: Selwyn Rayzor & Margaret Ann Renfroe  ()

Bellville Times

Edward Bivens Singleton left this world to be with the Lord on the 10th of Jan. 2015 surrounded by his family.

Edward was born on the 22nd of Oct. 1920 in Galveston, Texas to Dr. Albert O. Singleton and Will Dean Bivens Singleton. A proud "B.O.I." (Born On the Island), Edward had a happy childhood which he shared with his older brother Albert junior. He attended Ball High School, where he was voted Best Boy Dancer! Growing up he was passionate about baseball, climbing trees, spending time with friends and horseback riding on the beach.

After high school, Edward graduated from the University of Texas in Austin where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity as were his father and brother. He was a die-hard Longhorn fan throughout his life and loved everything UT related. He then went on to Medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha - a national honor society for medical students. Here he began pursuing his dream of becoming a physician. Like many young men of his age, Edward longed to serve his country during World War II. Much to his surprise and dismay he was told that he, along with ten percent of his medical school class were ineligible because of contracting tuberculosis. After finishing his residency, he was drafted and served in the Air Force while based in Alaska. Edward had hoped to follow in his father's and brother's footsteps and become a surgeon but because of his TB diagnosis, he was advised that surgery would be too demanding. He instead chose radiology and in 1953 became Chief of Radiology at two new combined hospitals being built in Houston - Texas Children's Hospital and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. He became Professor of Radiology at Baylor College of Medicine and a short time later became Professor of Radiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Edward has been awarded numerous honors and accolades throughout his illustrious career. These include among others- a 1980 recipient of UTMB's Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award ~ the university's highest medical alumni honor. In 1991 the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists awarded him the Walter B. Cannon medal for his outstanding contributions to the field, and in 1992 he was recognized by St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital as a Distinguished Physician and was presented with an endowed chair in his name. In 1995, he was presented the Radiological Society of North America's highest honor, the Gold Medal, given for long and outstanding service and for his pioneering work in pediatric radiology. In addition, he has received the gold medal from the Texas Radiology Society, the American Roentgen Ray Society, The American College of Radiology and the Society of Pediatric Radiology.

Edward was blessed with two loving wives; his first wife Selwyn Rayzor Singleton with whom he had three children; Evelyn Winifred Singleton, Edward Newton Singleton and Dean Renfert Singleton. In 1967 he married the love of his life Margaret Ann Renfroe and had two children; Ann Field Singleton and Scott Renfroe Singleton. Edward was a man of the highest integrity and strongest moral character. He was a devoted husband and father, a dedicated teacher, a humble leader, an encouraging mentor and a loyal friend. He was known to all who loved him by his quick wit and fun loving sense of humor. He was an animated storyteller with a sharp memory that could recall even the smallest details from years gone by. He loved the Lord and would say that the one thing in this world that no one could ever take away from you was your faith so you must always hold tight to that faith. He loved to share his heart whether it was with his adoring family or with his students through his passion of teaching. His amazing life and stories will forever be in the memories of the many people that were so deeply touched by him.

He was an active member of River Oaks Country Club where he enjoyed many years of tennis; a passion for golf and Sunday family dinners. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time at the family's ranch in Cat Spring, Texas. Weekends at the ranch found Edward doing all the things he loved… fishing, riding his tractor and bulldozer, feeding the cows, mowing the grass and cutting the huisache, riding his horse Mr. Ringo, picking the perfect peach off the tree, enjoying a swim on a hot summer day, relaxing by the fire with a martini on a cold winter night, playing board games with his family while making up his own rules as he went along and gazing at the stars in a vast Texas sky. The ranch held a special place in his heart and was a nice weekend escape from the city life that was home.

Edward is survived by his three children, Dean Singleton and his wife Peggy, Ann Singleton and Scott Singleton; his seven grandchildren - Hallie and her husband John, Cara and her husband Jimmy, John and his wife Corinne, Kit, Ella Scott, Reese and Tyler and five great grandchildren - Jack, Lucy, Wylder, Oliver and Milo; first cousin Judge John V. Singleton, jr. and his wife Pat; nephew Albert O. Singleton III and his wife Ann and their children and grandchildren; nieces Beth Cooperman and her husband Bob, Gail Welpley and her husband Mike and their children and grandchildren.

The family is blessed beyond measure for the life and legacy of Edward B. Singleton. His sweet spirit and kind soul will continue to shine brightly through all those who knew and loved him. We will miss him dearly but find comfort knowing he is at peace in his eternal home sweet home. We would like to express our sincerest thanks to all of the doctors, nurses and medical caregivers of St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital who lovingly cared for our dad over the past month.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Dr. Singleton during a reception from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 22nd of January, in grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 23rd of January, in the sanctuary of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Rev. Bill Denham, Pastor of Caring Ministries and the Rev. Dr. Laurens A. Hall are to officiate.

Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held at the River Oaks Country Club.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in memory of Dr. Singleton may be directed to the Edward B. Singleton M.D. Chair of Pediatric Radiology at Texas Children's Hospital, 1919 South Braeswood Blvd., Ste. 5214, Houston, TX, 77030, online at waystogive.texaschildrens.org/singleton; or to University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston, Development Office, 301 University Blvd, Galveston, TX, 77555.

Smesny, Aloisie (Dudik) (1860-1914)

Maiden Name: Dudik [Family] Spouse: Anton Smesny [Cemetery] Immaculate Conception Cemetery (Sealy) ()

Aloisie was a native of Kostelec u Stipia in Moravia, which at that time was part of the Empire of Austria.

Aloisie Dudik married Anton Smesny in 1879 in Stipske, Moravia. They were the parents of 10 children; seven of which lived to maturity. Their oldest child, Frantiska, was born May 23, 1880, in Kostelec u Stipia, and she died in December of 1880. Their sixth child, Marie Smesny, was born January 4, 1891, and their seventh child, Anton Smesny, was born August 20, 1893. Marie and Anton both died in a diptheria epidemic in 1895.

Aloisie's huband, Anton Smesny, was a fireman. His date of birth was March 25, 1853, and he died of pneumonia on Oct. 26, 1905, in Kostelec u Stipia, Moravia.

In 1900, Anton and Aloisie Smesny's oldest and youngest daughters, Filomena and Frantiska, left Moravia for Texas. Jan Pavlicek of Frydek, Texas, had written the Smesny Family and advised that he needed the girls to help on his farm. Filomena, who was 18, and Frantiska, who was 14, left on the ship, SS HALLE, for Texas. The middle daughter, Aloisie, remained in Kostelec as she was needed at home. In 1909, the oldest son, Frank Smesny, left Moravia on the ship SS KOLN, to join his sisters in Texas.

By 1912, Aloisie Smesny had made the decision to take the rest of her family to Texas. Aloisie had her sons, Teodor, Joe V., and Ludvik, and her daughter, Aloisie, and husband, Joe Hradil, and Aloisie and Joe Hradil's children, Hermina and Josef, with her in Kostelec. Aloisie Smesny's son-in-law, Josef Hradil, kept a journal of the family's trip to Texas. Josef Hradil wrote that on the morning of March 31, 1912, the Smesny and Hradil Families bid farewell to the neighbors and kin in Kostelec and traveled by wagon to the railway station in Zlin where they boarded a passenger train to Otrokovice, and at Otrokovice, they boarded a train which took them to the north.
On April 1, 1912, Josef Hradil wrote that they went through a medical inspection at Ratibou, and the health officials held Teodor Smesny back because he showed signs of the mumps. Teodor Smesny returned to Kostelec where he stayed with his uncle, Rudolf Smesny.

On April 3, 1912, Josef Hradil wrote that they arrived in Bremen, Germany, where they again went through medical inspections. On the morning of April 4, the family traveled by train to the Bremen harbor where they boarded the steamship, SS HANOVER. At half past noon, the siren of the steamship sounded and the ship started to move slowly out of the harbor, thus began the family's voyage to America.

Aloisie Smesny's son, Joe V. Smesny, would tell his family that several days into their voyage, one evening, the whistles of a large ship could be heard so everyone went on deck to see what ship it was. A quarter-of-a-mile away was the RMS TITANIC. The TITANIC was moving at a fast speed, and the ship looked so bright and beautiful in the twilight that young Joe V. and his brother Ludvik told their mother how much they wished they could be traveling on that beautiful ship. They watched the TITANIC until the ship disappeared into the horizon. The waves caused by the TITANIC's wake caused a great deal of rocking on the Smesny's small steamship.

Josef Hradil wrote in his journal that on April 12, at 8 a.m., the steamship, SS HANOVER, received a telegraphic message to avoid one certain path since there was a big danger due to large icebergs, so the ship turned to the left. On the morning of April 13, a large iceberg could be seen from the steamship, and Josef Hradil wrote that it was so large that it looked like a castle floating on the sea.

Josef Hradil also recorded in his journal that the SS HANOVER had received a distress message from RMS TITANIC as that ship had struck an iceberg and was sinking. However, the HANOVER was too far away to have reached the TITANIC's location in time. It is said that when the news of the TITANIC's sinking reached the HANOVER that Aloisie Smesny turned to her sons, Joe V. and Ludvik, and told them that they had better be glad they had not been on that ship, or they would now be at the bottom of the ocean.

On April 17, 1912, the SS HANOVER approached the harbor of Philadelphia. More medical inspections followed after the steamship docked at Philadelphia, but the passengers stayed on board ship. The HANOVER remained in Philadelphia's harbor until April 20, when it set off for Galveston, Texas. Josef Hradil wrote in his journal that as the ship passed through the Florida Keys that the island of Cuba could be seen in the distance.

The HANOVER docked at the port of Galveston on April 26, 1912. They family stayed on board ship one more night. On the morning of April 27, more medical examinations came. In the immigration medical records, Aloisie Smesny's physical description is given as 5'3" in height, with a fair complexion, blond hair, and gray eyes. Aloisie named her son-in-law, Alois Peska, as her contact person in Texas, and gave their point of destination as Sealy, Texas.

Afterward, the passengers gathered their possessions and passed through customs when the unthinkable happened. Aloisie Smesny was sitting in a room alone when a man dressed in a police uniform came in and told her in very fluent Czech that if she had any money or jewelry that he would hold them for her or she would be taxed as she went through customs. Since this man spoke very fluent Czech, Aloisie trusted him to be a fellow countryman. Aloisie gave the man $300 in cash. After she went through customs, Aloisie went to look for this man, but he was nowhere to be found. A hard beginning in a new land of promise.

After customs, Josef Hradil wrote that the family was met with a carriage by his three brothers-in-law, Frank Smesny, Alois Peska, and Peter Jalowy. The family went to a hotel that belonged to Frantisek Kuizanovskz, a country-man, where they had lunch and a toast to their reunion. At 5 p.m., the family boarded a train in Galveston, and at 10 p.m, the family arrived in Sealy where they were met by Smesny daughters, Frances Peska and Filomena Jalowy.

They arrived at the Peska home in the nearby community of Frydek very late that night, but had to get up early the next morning to go work in the fields. The Peskas loaned Aloisie money with the agreement that Aloisie, Joe V., and Ludvik, would help with the work on the farm. Young Ludik and Joe V. had never chopped cotton before, and it did not take long before the two boys decided they wanted to return to Europe!
Aloisie and her sons, Joe V. and Ludvik, lived with the Peska Family until Aloisie rented a farm near Beasley, in Fort Bend County, Texas, where she moved her sons. Determined to pay back her loan and not being conditioned to the hot, humid climate of the Texas Gulf Coast, Aloisie Smesny worked hard in the fields, but suffered a heat stroke which greatly affected her mobility.

On September 11, 1913, Aloisie's son, Teodore Smesny, arrived in Texas when his ship, the SS BRESLAU, docked in Galveston. Teodore made his way to Austin County where he went to work as a field hand. Teodor said he only was only able to see his mother twice after he arrived in Texas.

Nearly two years after her arrival in Texas, Aloisie Smesny died at the age of 53 years from complications of the heat stroke she had suffered. Young Ludvik Smesny, who was only 12, and Joe V., who was nearly 15, tried to farm the land on their own that their mother had rented, but eventually gave up and hired themselves out as farm hands.

Smesny, Frank (1888-1965)

[Family] Father: Anton Smesny, Mother: Aloisie Dudik, Spouse: Pauline Zapalac [Cemetery] Immaculate Conception Cemetery (Sealy) () , FG

Frank was a native of Kostelec u Stipia in Moravia, which at that time was part of the Empire of Austria-Hungary. Frank Smesny immigrated to Texas in 1909 on the ship, Koln, which docked in Galveston, Texas, on April 10, 1909, and Frank traveled to Austin County, Texas, where he was reunited with his two sisters, Filomena Jalowy and Frantiska Peska, who had come to Texas in 1900. Frank Smesny worked as a farm hand in Texas.

Frank married Pauline Zapalac on April 29, 1913, in Frydek, Texas, and they were the parents of four children; one daughter died in infancy. Frank and Pauline Smesny farmed in the Austin County community of Frydek until they retired and moved into Sealy.

Smesny, Melvin Charles (1941-2021)

USFlag[Veteran] Vietnam, SP4, US Army [Family] Father: Charles Anton Smesny, Mother: Sedona Marie “Sidney” Marek, Spouse: Larue [Cemetery] Houston National Cemetery () , FG

Melvin Charles Smesny was born January 7, 1941 and left this earth February 20, 2021.

He is survived by his beloved wife Larue Smesny, daughters Kimberly and Megan Smesny, and his three grandchildren Chase, Jacob and Emily Smesny. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Charles and Sidney Smesny, and Sisters Loretta Smesny and Charlene Buss.

He now celebrates in being reunited with his grandparents, and all his uncles, aunts, cousins and friends that went before him to prepare for his homecoming with the Lord.

He spent his school years in Sealy, TX, where he attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School and later graduated from Sealy High School.

He went on to serve three years in the United States Army and later moved to Houston with his parents.

His career started at Schill Steel Services as a dispatcher and later operations manager, where he met his wife of 45 years and after over 25 years of devoted service retired to be a full time pawpaw. He was a devout catholic, serving as an altar boy for many years and worked with his wife as ministers in preparing numerous families in the sacrament of baptism. He was very proud of his Czech heritage, an avid supporter for Houston Sports teams, a dedicated fisherman and he made sure to pass that pride onto his children and grandchildren. As much as he enjoyed fishing, tackle, boating and teaching his skills to others, he was the only fisherman who would not eat what he caught. Because of his love of bar-b-queuing, Melvin would put just about anything on the pit and passed that love on to his grandsons. He graciously collected artwork created by his granddaughter and displayed them proudly along with tons of pictures he took throughout the years in frames on his walls.

He loved his family beyond anything he ever did. No vacation, dinner out, birthday or celebration was ever spend without them. Although he has been wheelchair and bedridden for a while, his last week was spent making sure his family was safe and finally at home after the historic Houston snow storm, before he finally closed his own eyes to rest one last time. Melvin collected many names over his lifetime such as husband, dad, pawpaw, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be remembered for his meaningful conversations, firm handshakes, butterfly kisses and gentle heart. Sometime in the future when someone says that they miss our father or wish he was still around, as his daughters and grandchildren, we hope to say you are looking right at him because we are living the legacy he left behind.

The family would like to thank everyone for their support and outreach of kind words during this difficult time. Melvin loved supporting military events such as Wreaths Across America and we ask that you would please consider donating in his name.
